Lucas Associates was founded on the notion that a small architectural firm that is both experienced and versatile can provide, as generalists, unique, appropriate architectural solutions and offer, as specialists, the success of process and the habit of creative design excellence. We offer a special interest in historic and neighborhood context, examining the special qualities of a site, integrating indoors and outdoors, and bringing a sense of a family hearth or place into the living spaces. In the last five years, as families have decided to remain in and improve their homes, we have successfully planned and completed many residential projects that have been comprehensive renovation projects. These included one or more additions and a significant amount of interior renovations and remodeling of the existing house. The program for these renovations usually reflects a desire to modify and older home to reflect the family’s more modern way of life. Every family and every success story has been different. Most families have a clear sense about how they want to live, what deficiencies can be corrected and what improvements scan be icorporated. We listen well to understand these themes of aspirations, requirements and ideas and, with some degree of creative interpretation, attempt to translate those aspirations first into alternative explorations and eventually into beautiful built form. Inherent in our work are the technical skills and practical experience to balance both budget and construction economies into any conceptual solution. We work with contractors who are able to, early in the process, identify a scope and schedule of work.. Also integrated in our work are approaches that consider energy efficiency and sustainable sensibilities, especially as so much of our work is within the watershed of the Chesapeake Bay.
