We believe that great clients are integral to the design process, so we seek them out as we seek to create beautiful work. We engage in architectural design, and love the creative process no matter the medium. We enjoy sites that can respond to the design and vice versa. In Toronto, the Muskokas and throughout Canada, BLDG Workshop pursues the goal of creating architectural design that forms a sense of place through responding to client needs, the site and its conditions. Favourite projects often include custom homes, cottages, renovations and additions where the site includes natural features that can become integral to the overall design. We consider sustainability, interior, industrial, and landscape design as instrumental in our work as we approach projects in relationship to their context. We feel the best way to create successful design is to embrace a collaborative relationship in which the client’s voice and ideas are heard and implemented. We believe that good architectural design should respond to many fundamental and site specific principles; however, at the end of the day, your home should respond primarily to you.

BLDG Workshop, led by architectural designer Nathan Buhler, is simply brilliant. This is our third experience working with a designer to build a new home--BLDG stands out for its clear and creative dialog with us on both the interior and exterior design. Responsive, sensitive and very collaborative, we feel that BLDG is our partner in creating a home that will not only be a pleasure to live in, but we expect will stand the test of time as fine architectural design. BLDG is respectful of our budget, and has been very responsive to our aggressive timeline, turning solutions within days of our discussions. Nathan's knowledge of resources and building techniques for extreme weather conditions (i.e. Vermont), was a must for this project. Fun, exciting, and a flawless effort.

In our first meeting we explained we were looking for a cross between Cottage, Industrial, and Modern. They made sense of it! We highly recommend Nathan and his team. Their ability to understand, space by space, what we envisioned and then finding the right compromises to make it functional is what we sought - and what they delivered on. BLDG was also pro-active in resolving permitting and helped narrow down the choice of contractor. Building a house is stressful - working with Nathan was not. He is down to earth but knows his stuff inside and out.

Nathan built us our dream home and we would recommend him to anyone. All of our asks were delivered on (especially our ask to maximize natural light!) and overall beyond our expectations with an amazing design. Nathan was so lovely to work with, highly collaborative, very accommodating and creative. All of the trades have gone out of their way to tell us how much they love the design too - one experienced site supervisor asked if he could bring his wife round to check it out which was a first for him in all his years, he just loved the design so much he wanted her to see. Thank you Nathan for such an amazing design and it was a pleasure!

Nathan Buhler drove down to our lot, took a look at the surroundings, we chatted a bit about our family and Oh my gosh! did he design a dream home for us! Everyday I walk around our new home and admire the thought he put in designing a beautiful space for us to live in. We were blessed to have found him on Houzz.com and teamed with a great builder, we ended up with a home which is even better than we imagined it would be. My advice to anyone starting on this very stressful journey of building a home is to hire a great designer like Nathan. It would be the best money spent as a good plan saves a lot of money during construction and beyond. The whole process becomes exciting and fond memories made for many years to come.

house exterior moves to BLACK Nathan Buhler is the next person to thank for his keen advice and patience - my house has been transformed - everything from white to black - and perfect! Professional advice with kindness, that's Nathan! Our house hasn’t had an upgrade to its exterior for 40 years. With white shutters, downspouts, eaves troughs, soffit & fascia, Nathan was my first contact to ask for advice on using black. He thought black would be stunning, not heavy, but make a statement. So with a gasp, we went for BLACK - STUNNING! How our house speaks modern, sophisticated, elegant! THANK YOU!

We hired BLDG Workshop for our home renovation project. They produced permit drawings and also applied for and acquired the building permit on our behalf. We were really happy with the work that Nathan and his team did for us. I would definitely hire them again for other projects, and highly recommend them to anyone looking to make their home more beautiful and functional. Nathan was really easy to work with. First of all, he is a truly nice human being. He was courteous, positive, and was complimentary about our home. I mention the latter, because often the client can feel somewhat self-conscious when knowing that one's home is in desperate need of renovations. Nathan never made us feel as though our home—in its current state—wasn't worthy. Nathan is creative and smart, and suggested some great ideas for our renovation that we could not have envisioned on our own. That said, he never tried to push his ideas on us, but rather worked with us to understand our goals, aesthetic preferences, and budget. Nathan's drawings were very meticulous, easy to understand, and accurate. He was quick to respond with any changes we asked for, and was always responsive when we had questions. Working with BLDG Workshop was a seamless experience. I hope we can work together in the future.

Nathan performed two large designs for my wife and I. The first, a modern home on a rural property we purchased. We all were in love with the design and ready to dig, until...we found another property which required significant renovation and work. My wife and I were at loggerhead. Do we build the house Nathan designed that we loved, or with Nathan's help redesign an existing property. Conversations and pros and cons ensued. We agreed on the renovation, the property was too good to pass up. Nathan provided renovated designs and away we went. The people we sold the first property to were also in love with Nathan's vision. So, they bought the plans and began. Nathan was/is great. Highly recommend if you are looking for high design with a nod to livability. 5 high five emoji's.

BLDG worksop helped us out with a space re-design turning a space previously used as a 2 bedroom suite in an old Inn into a functional kitchen / dining / living room. They also helped with the planning and local building permit related administrative work ensuring that the local authorities were on-board with the work being completed. The design enabled us to come in on budget and on time. We would definitely use the services of Nathan and his team again for future building / design projects.

We've been working with Nathan on the design of a rooftop terrace for a number of months, leveraging his design expertise, but also (and more importantly at the moment) navigating the City's zoning and building permit processes. He has taken the lead on the project and with his calm, confident and thorough approach, we've been relatively stress-free (so far!). We appreciate his creativity, and his openness to incorporating our ideas (and whims). He has been honest and realistic with us -characteristics we look for. His plans allow us to dream of a beautiful summer terrace under the stars! We haven't started the physical project yet...but we have every confidence that working with Nathan will be an excellent partnership. Stay tuned for Chapter 2...The Build.

Nathan is an ingenious ‘ideas’ person that approaches design with purpose and with a great eye for aesthetic. We recently hired BLDG Workshop to redesign our dated 70's split level home into a modern, design masterpiece! We couldn't be happier with the end result. Nathan and his team were wonderful to work with, flying across the country to meet with us! They welcomed our thoughts and incorporated our ideas while offering their own expertise. The light, the views and the flow through the home (our top 3 complaints prior to the extensive renovation) are now some of our favourite aspects our home. This is the second time we've used BLDG Workshop and we recommend them without any reservation!

We hired BLDG Workshop to create our dream home on a beautiful site overlooking a valley and a ski hill north of Toronto. BLDG Workshop used our steep and tricky site to tie the design of our home into the hill while creating an even more exciting design than we had dreamed. The different spaces and views throughout the home are amazing! You can see the project on his site called the Crow's Nest Home, we can't wait for it to be completed!

Nathan collaborated with us on a rooftop garden design, which won 2 Provincial Awards from Landscape Ontario. His firm rocked their portion of the design - the architectural components. Under very tight schedule pressure, they produced working drawings and obtained a permit just in time to meet aggressive construction window. We worked with Nathan on a number of other projects since. And incidentally, he's a wonderful warm and collegial.

Nathan has been an exception designer to work with, he has taken our ideas and evolved them into more cohesive, integrated architecture that maintains the essence of the existing house and sympathetically incorporates the additions. The whole project, when complete, will look as if it was desired to look that way from the beginning - our 50's modernist home will maintain its original character yet achieve the contemporary upgrade we wanted.

This was such a fun little job. It's nice to work through something in this way and see a great project emerge at the end.

Working with Nathan and BLDG Workshop has been excellent. A lot of care and thoughtful consideration happened around both our present and future needs as homeowners. From only a handful of half-formed ideas on our part, Nathan has put together a plan conscious of our dreams and our budget, and knowing we have his knowledge and professionalism looking out for us is very reassuring. His enthusiasm for this project is infectious, we can't wait to see it come to fruition.

Nathan Buhler took the time to really understand us as clients. He then designed a house that, after 3 years, I still look forward to coming home to at the end of every day. Nathan obviously cares about how the house would impact its occupants, and our satisfaction was his goal. If you are looking for an architect who will understand your needs and show you the possibilities, you need to see Nathan. You can see our house on Nathan's site - it is the "Analog" house.

Nathan really hears his client throughout the design process. He invited comment at all stages in the residential project I was close to, and was able to read their needs while maintaining a clean modernist aesthetic.

We can highly recommend BLDG Workshop with complete confidence. In contrast to the many bumps along the way of our renovation and addition, the design process was exciting and enjoyable. Nathan and his team of professionals were timely and efficient, good at communication, and willing to work with the trades we had hired; however, their best attribute is of course their smart, inspired design! Our favourite part of working with BLDG was the collaborating... they are the experts but they listened to our ideas and were excellent at incorporating our whims and wishes. We will definitely be contacting BLDG the next time we build!
