The term “design” has many view points but I tend to not be limited to any set rule other than working to give the client what they are looking for and having it represent their personality rather than a trend in design. Good design is a timeless element and is always appropriate. Over the years of creating successful architecture and interior spaces, I have developed a questionnaire for both residential and commercial settings. Early in my career I found clients really did not know the proper terminology to express what they really desired. Good design will always be and it is how one uses the influences of the past to shape the future. Design trends cycle and in today's fast pace world one needs to look out for the signs of change and reflect on history to evaluate what will be the next phase in design. One cannot have a preconceived idea of what is “correct” until all of these items are addressed. This is not always the case though; sometimes it is a very constrained budget that requires a creative adaptive use of material to get the job done. These are founding elements that play an important role within planning a space. It has been a long standing interest of mine that the elderly and handicapped be provided for in all design. Yes, sometimes it creates an extra expense, but we as a society are richer for the interaction and independence it allows for people who would have needed to depend on others for support. While working on multi-family properties and residential homes I have emphasized the need to plan ahead and allow for the wider doors and hallways, ADA approved toilets, roll-in showers, and wider turning radius's. For home builders I have stressed the need for at least one bedroom on the first floor that is ADA compliant. Design is about more than a color, a trend, or what your neighbor is building. It is a reflection on one’s inner-self or an institutions image. It gives comfort, wholeness, and organization to an environment. It is a plan that is artistically or skillfully proposed for a specific purpose. It is a masterful cohesion of elements creating a scheme for something to be executed or constructed. It is one’s need to express a livable work of art.
