A lifelong passion. “I’ve always liked residential design and architecture, and I loved growing up in a city that values landscape architecture so greatly,” says Leidner, a Dallas native. “I started with a lawn-mowing business all through high school, and that passion has continued ever since.”
Problem-solving design. Leidner is constantly inspired by his clients and their spaces. “I enjoy interacting with our clients and trying to solve their problems,” he says. “Landscape architecture is extremely visual and very rewarding, because the final product that you’re working for is created right in front of your eyes.”

1. Understand Your Site
Leidner recommends starting by assessing your property to understand what you’re working with: “What do you have? What do you like? What are you looking for? Asking these sorts of questions will help you understand the scope of your project,” he says.
The Highland Park home seen here was on “a heavily wooded lot, and we wanted to incorporate that into the outdoor space,” Leidner says. “The homeowners wanted something formal, peaceful and French. She is a writer, and her office looks out onto the garden.”

2. Integrate Your Home’s Architecture
Blur the line between your indoor and outdoor spaces by including the home’s architecture in your landscape design. “This allows the spaces to work together and function cohesively,” Leidner says.
The landscaping for this traditional home in Preston Hollow was designed in conjunction with its architecture. It “incorporates a creek that runs through the property and mirrors the home’s symmetry,” he says. “There are great views from the home into the backyard. The property also includes gates, an entry fountain from Paris, a koi pond and a spa.”

3. Find Your Purpose
Determine your space’s purpose and function. “Ask yourself specifically what it is you want to be doing, whether that’s sitting by the fire, watching a movie or cooking in an outdoor kitchen,” Leidner says. “When you begin with a goal in mind, you’ll use your space to the fullest.”
The owners of the Mediterranean home in Preston Hollow seen here had previously lived in a high-rise condo. “They were looking to create a yard that would be kid-friendly for their grandchildren,” Leidner says. “The new home includes a prayer garden, a swimming pool, a sport court and lots of green space for the kids to run around.”

It most likely is artificial grass.
Monkey grass or dwarf mondo can be used in between the pavers. It's really hardy and stays green. Also, in Texas in complete shade you can grow fescue grass. I do this under my big trees. I'm in Dallas. Artificial grass is becoming very popular here especially in smaller spaces. I believe it runs about $2-$3 a square foot for installation. If you want regular grass in your yard, zoysia is the best choice for this area.
I love the look you did with the pool and the concrete pavers and grass. Is it just strips of (artificial) grass cut to fit in between the pavers? I live in CA, this look seems to give the area the cool look of grass, but a lot less maintenance and no watering. I would assume it is cheaper than doing full turf and cutting around the pavers.
