Concentrating on construction. Meade’s love of construction began when he was a child and only got stronger as he grew up. “I enrolled in a technical school for carpentry when I was still in high school,” he says. Since then, he’s worked on everything from hotel renovations to building his own home. He started Prime 1 Builders in 2004, focusing first on additions and remodeling and then adding in new home construction. “It’s been a journey,” he says.
Finding a balance. Meade says one of his priorities is providing an enjoyable construction experience, because he knows what a big investment people are making when renovating their homes. “I’m happiest when I’m able to share my knowledge of home design and construction with homeowners,” he says. He adds that another role he plays is helping clients focus on their priorities. “They should spend money on what is important to them,” he says.

1. Brighten Up With Light and Color
To create a space that sparks joy every time you enter the room, add lightness and levity. At this Greenfield home, the kitchen was initially small, dark and outdated. “By opening up the wall that led into the dining room and adding a sliding door, we brought more light into the space,” says Meade.
The interplay of earth tones and geometric shapes add a warm and welcoming touch. Light neutral shades paired with the sea-foam blue hue of the lower cabinetry and kitchen peninsula bring in brightness and color, while sunbeams bounce off the tile and countertop. “The tile placement also helps the small room look larger,” Meade adds.
Interior designer Emily Klapkowski of You-Neek Designs also collaborated with the client on this project.

2. Make a Statement
Show off your new space with an eye-catching focal point. The dramatic quartz on the island and backsplashes sets the tone for this remodeled kitchen in a Mt. Washington condo. “The homeowners fell in love with this piece and felt it was worth the investment,” Meade says.
The newly renovated space has a more contemporary look with some traditional charm. The highlight is the long island, perfect for food prep and entertaining. The brass cabinet pulls and the tops of the pendant lights add some subtle warmth and tie in with the legs of the counter chairs. Meade also added a 90-bottle wine cooler and serving area just off the main work area for entertaining. “The homeowners are wine connoisseurs,” he says.

3. Customize High-Use Areas
For spaces you use every day, it can be well worth investing in a custom design to make sure they perfectly suit your needs. Meade says one space where it really pays to customize is the kitchen. He redid the layout in this Venetia kitchen to meet the needs of an accomplished cook who loves to have family and friends gather.
High-end appliances were a priority from the start. The new kitchen holds a 60-inch Wolfe stove, double ovens, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, two dishwashers and a warming drawer. “It might seem like a lot, but the homeowner uses them all the time,” Meade says. He also reconfigured the existing island and added an angled granite eating bar. Other changes include Craftsman-inspired custom cabinetry that goes with the home’s style, travertine flooring and a large walk-in pantry.
