Kitchen/Dining Room Extension Project
Corian in Jade Onyx may be the kitchen worktop and splashback alternative to the dark wood I was looking for. DuPont also do Corian in dark wood effect, but this light top will keep the kitchen light and fresh, and look unusual enough to add the wow factor to warm pale green cabinets and darkwood floors.
Great alternative to marble shelves in the pantry. Cover MDF with a layer of granite to produce a marblelike affect shelving for a fraction of the cost of marble.
Long reeded glass cylinder pendant from Etsy for £138 with metallic grey chord and nickle light fittings - three required for above the cooker from Spark and Bell: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/723702547/long-reeded-glass-cylinder-pendant-light?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=Long+clear+Reeded+Glass+Cylinder+Pendant+Light&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&organic_search_click=1&frs=1&variation0=1159471523&variation1=1159471499
Lovely for a stretch of wall in the dining area.
A corner pantry - on the side of the walk in larder - containing "everyday" stuff - a toast and coffee machine point with room for teabags, powdered drinks, teacups and other standard packets and jars used every day - ie oils, vinegar, salt, pepper, herbs and spices. An additional pull out "worktop" under the standard worktop would be a bonus addition.
kitchen colours in action. Moss or olive green cabinets with mahogany (or wenge) wood worktops.
An example of the green (serpentine green in corian), wenge wood and cream I am looking for in the kitchen. Table T size M/ - Serpentine Green solid Corian, cooked wenge natural solid Wood, powder/soft pink color of metallic construction/ 75x75x72cm
Another view of the similar layout of kitchen extension.
Almost exactly have I want our new kitchen extension layout to be.
This shows a similar layout to our new extension; with the roof lantern running horizontally across the extension width, the French doors opening to the side of the extension and the hob on an island in a similar position as ours would be.
using wire baskets that hang off the bottom of the shelf as extra storage - in this case for loaves of bread. Ingenious.
Lovely example where dry goods have been decanted into square storage jars, tins have been placed on stepped shelf units and smaller sauces and spices are place on carousels. All food can be easily accessed, two sets of them without ever having to remove the food in front of it!
Carousels are a great way to ensure that ALL tins can be accessed - even those a the back of the shelf.
Tall plastic containers are great for storing cereal and pasta (particularly spaghetti)
Open packets can be closed with this combination of a set of vertical hook rack with big clips hanging off them. Ingenious!
square glass storage jars to decant open packets and stop food from going stale.
Clever storage ideas - using a design feature to store spice bottles in a hob worktop cabinet.
Example of finish on a red brick extension. I love the lantern on this extension as well as the pretty patterned brickwork on the top of the walls. I would want ours to be finished, in the same way and topped with a red coping stone or red triangular or saddleback brick coping.
This is the kind of side extension roof I was looking for. A sloping glass roof and NOT a lantern.
Interesting and pertinent article on kitchen and worktop comparisons.
A large cabinet is a continuation of kitchen storage. You could use this bonus space as a pantry for any number of things: dry goods, crockery, tea towels, cleaning products – even a microwave. Could repurpose existing conservatory cupboard for seldom used dinnerware, tablecloths, napkins, candle sticks, serving dishes etc. and pair with a dresser top to create a display stand for nice crockery in the dining room extension.
note the use of brackets to hold stemmed glassware under wall mounted cupboards - more efficient use of space than placing them in cupboards and keeps the interior of the glass dust free.
Run shelving under wall mounted cupboards to provide more stacking space for plates, bowls etc and use fancy square brackets to make a piece of plywood shelving look more expensive.
The AEG BPK742320M Built In Electric 60cm Stainless Steel Single Oven - want two of these at eye level! Available through Howdens.co.uk or on Kingdomappliances.co.uk for £431.99 (new graded but with light markings - so refurbished)
Wickes Heritage in Sage. This is probably being sold as a pantry cupboard, but I want a walk in larder, so this cupboard would be perfect to house gadgets and often used cookbooks, freeing up valuable workspace.
More of Wickes' Heritage range here again in Sage with dark worktops AND dark flooring - a combination I would really love with the addition of white brick shape tiles on the walls.
This is a great and inexpensive kitchen from Wickes Heritage range in the colour sage (a pale green colour) I particularly like this unit as it depicts eye level ovens which is what i will need in the new extension.
Example of kitchen with darkwood floors and work surface. only needs to have a light olive cabinet paired with it now!
Wenge seems more stripey than black oak.
Another worktop in Wenge. Actually a wood far more resiliant than black oak with more grain. I like the sunken worktop with built in hob with a raised area for bar seating. Worth bearing in mind when creating an island or peninsular working with and eating space.
This is a lovely 40mm wide black oak worktop from worktop-express.co.uk which at time of writing has 25% off this range. Great for use with a pale olive green kitchen unit.
Love this Wenge Wood worktop and think it would look fab with olive green cabinets and wenge wood flooring.
Lovely sage kitchen with a BOTTLE FRIDGE!! Love this idea but don't know if I could better use this space for more storage and put bottles in larder?? Also love the cream brick tiles and think that goes SO WELL with sage green.
In Benchmarx Kitchens Somerset range is this really useful corner larder unit. whilst not the walk in style I was after, it does cram a lot of shelving space in hear. Its certainly good as storage for appliances but I doubt it would be as cool as a proper chilled larder.
Here is the same Somerset Kitchen Range from Benchmarx Kitchens - this time in bone white (also a really nice colour) but more importantly with the cup handles and knobs. I would use these on the sage green version. I also love the painted cream brickwork which would look lovely in the kitchen (along with cream brickwork style tile) and the larder area.
This is the Somerset Olive Green Kitchen Range from Benchmarx kitchens (benchmarxkitchens.co.uk/Kitchens/Kitchen-Ranges/Somerset/Olive-Green). Love the colour and the wood worktops, but the handles are not great. prefer large silver knobs and silver cup draw pulls.
Love this sage green colour shaker style kitchen and particularly the cup shaped silver handles and door knobs. Also love the marble surfaces but am aware that this stain and discolour easily.l
Arched doors/windows better frame the garden than wide panes of glass or sliding doors.
Under stairs walk-in larder
Here you can see the side and rear extension next to the original lines of the house. The RSJ would be hidden behind the "book case" area in the side extension to support one corner of the original external wall, but where is the second RSJ to support the original far exterior wall? other pictures show no obvious supporting pillars or structures.
A face on view of a rear and side extension with placement of roof lanterns in new extended areas. Note how the Kitchen island sits horizontal to the room instead of vertical, so providing a definitive marker between kitchen space and dining space.
An example of two roof lanterns within a kitchen extension, where the one in the side extension does not sit flush to the edge of the extension but is inset to allow inbuilt head-height cupboards and work surfaces to nestle beside it. This has the clever result of flooding the walkway with light rather than the work surfaces themselves.
Beautiful examples of roof lanterns for kitchen extension project.
Interior example of the same orangery extension with roof lantern. Deceptive from outside, the roof lantern provides a huge amount of sunlight and feeling of spaciousness in what looks like a small extension from the outside.
Exterior example of an orangery extension with roof lantern. Beautiful flat roof with joinery fascia provides a lovely classical and elegant look to this extension.
Prime example of a side and rear extension, with use of huge sky lanterns on side and rear extension ceilings to bring in extra light. Original kitchen would be where the dining table is (complete with island workspace incorporating 8 burner hob), the rear extension would be the dining/social space whilst the office/play area in the photo would be for work space, double eye level ovens and the doorway to the far right of the photo could be where a pantry would be.
Love this tucked away walk in larder!
Incorporation of a dining space and an extended kitchen space, with a large roof lantern in place. The only main difference here is that the extension is wide and shallow; whereas our extension would be long and deep.
an idea of the kind of roof to have in the rear kitchen extension.
This photo of a walk in larder looks a lot how my own will look when the shelves have been installed.
