What To Do?

I have lived with my dark and rather drab kitchen for seven years and am ready for a change. Besides updating I hope to enrich the natural light coming into the kitchen and add good light from fixtures. I cannot add skylights as there is a room above. Also, the cabinets are good quality and I want to keep them. There is dark wood throughout the house so I hesitate to paint them. The windows face West so I have limited light in the morning and too much light in the afternoon. My style is traditional and eclectic. I like finding old kitchen treasurers for display. I appreciate any and all ideas. Thanks

I would definitely add a backsplash

Yes agree about a backsplash. Also take down the track lighting and get pendants lights over the island and a chandalier over the table and add highhats too. Can you add a window over the sink? Is that an outside wall?

Well, yes. It is the demonstration that a vintage-inspired design can be used very well in places of high use. It is solid and painted looks current. It looks uncrafted, but that facilitates low costs. It's kind of cowered to me.

Besides adding a back splash as Sherri mentioned, I'd replace the countertop with something very light so it would reflect light rather than absorb it.

Replacing the black appliances with white ones would also add more light to the room. And I read earlier this year tht white appliances are coming back in style if that matters.

Other than that, you have a beautiful kitchen, and I really like the stuff above your sink! I love it when people have the courage to let their homes reflect them rather than bowing to the whims of designers who forbid them from having any personal items around.

You may want to consider painting just the upper cabinets and/or the island. That look is popular. Also, you may also want to consider under cabinet lighting. I would put it on a switch with a dimmer if you can. And, changing one or two of the uppers to glass fronts will make the room look bigger. Have fun!

Maybe add some decorative built shelves above the sink. The table needs a rug under it to separate the space.

Your cabinets are good!
Agree with adding pot lights, under counter lights, pendants and any other lights your electrician can dream up.

I would add crown molding to the top of your cabinets, new lighter counter tops, and ditch the blinds on the windows unless you need them for privacy. I love the dark wood molding around them.

I definitely agree : lighter counters, glass or stone back splash, new appliances, chandelier (glass or chrome), and Ill add roman shades instead of blinds, and pulls instead of knobs would lessen the view of dark cabinetry while still keeping them. Is it also possible to turn a few of the doors into glass paneled? Hope that helps!

I would replace the hardware/knobs to update the cabinets. I would add
Led lighting strips on the top or bottom of the cabinets. I agree with you needing a backsplash as well. I would change the blinds to sheer roman shades. Something soft and elegant. Maybe add a floor lamp to go over the table in the kitchen nook.

Thank you very much for all your ideas and suggestions. It is interesting and fun to have 'new eyes' look at a room I am so familiar with.
Some of your ideas my husband and I had not even thought about and some of your suggestions reconfirmed what we were thinking. We had not thought about a backsplash, new door handles, chandelier over the table or roman shades - great ideas to incorporate. We had thought about lighter counter tops, glass in some of the cabinets (my husband does stain glass), white appliances (I was debating between white and stainless steel), pocket lights, pendants and painting. I like the idea of painting the walls green but would it be too dark? Would you paint the ceiling white?
Please keep the ideas coming. Thanks too for the links to photos - sure does help to see a visual.

I'd definitely go with stainless steel appliances if new appliances are in the budget. Many new ones are finger print proof too.

I would definitely stick to a simple back splash like a plain glass one or light coloured tiles and then to brighten up the cabinets I would install under cabinet lighting as these are so easy to install and are very cheap to purchase. I have attached an example below:
