Is this enough kitchen lighting?

not roughed in or installed yet, but mocked up below?

2 lights over island &
1 over breakfast area (wired with island lights)
4 or 5 under cabinet lights (own switch dimmer)
1 in hood over range
2 in hall near mudroom leading to garage (own switch)
Kitchen is 13' X 9', 7' island, and breakfast is 6' x 9'.

Looking for some thoughts/feedback on is this enough lighting of if we should add recess cans?

If you have the budget, more lighting options is always better. If you do get cans, you might want to have them on a dimmer switch. Keep in mind that too many cans can make your ceiling look like swiss cheese and a major source of heat loss from your home is from can lighting (there are some installation tricks to make them more energy-efficient). I would do separate switching with the island and breakfast area as these areas have different functions.

thanks for the idea of separate island and breakfast switches. I'm thinking of lantern style pendants that give off a lot of light. If you were to put recess, any suggestions on location? how about an L shape like this? or should it be more uniform?

Hello: There is the topic of using light colors in small and dark spaces in the larger, but ' this does not always work. The kitchens must like everything, make themselves as pleasant as they result to their users. Natural worktops, granite and wooden furniture, always give good results. It looks good, stone countertop or white quartz and oak cabinet. It is also worth a top of oak or imitation and white furniture. Colors can be used all. Preferably soft tones. Realmente todos los colores sirven para una cocina, aunque desaconsejo los colores frios. Hay que tener en cuenta, si se trata de un espacio cerrado, o si debe integrarse al living.

House in la Olivella, Barcelona.

This tradicional 70's house, with great mountain views in Olivella, Barcelona, needed an extension to benefit from the main side terrace on a plot with an important slope. We were asked to develop a full-scale refurbishment of this detached house located in la Olivella, Barcelona. This quiet residential area is surrounded by large groups of mature pine trees that give shelter to the villas below. The house had a challenging interior configuration. The main intervention we proposed has been this glass extension at the ground floor of the house to allow for a larger kitchen and dining space inviting the light to fill its interior spaces. Four inch cans in the locations shown plus three more along the bottom and left to make a square in the ceiling. I usually locate mine directly over the counter or 12” in front of the cabinet face

I'm looking for additional feedback on this See mockups and layouts.

1. (own switch) Planning on 2 hall lights near mudroom & closet. Not sure if going with simple fixtures or (4" or 5" ) cans.

2. (own switch) Two pendant island lights

3. (own switch) Going with 3 or 4 cans (4" or 5") to left and right of sink and right of oven. Not sure if should go with can in front of sink since it may not center or pendant above an eliminate that can.

4, I think I should put a can in front of pantry

Definitely recommend light by pantry.
Personally, I prefer the lights to be placed as symmetrical as possible.

More lights- they are so cheap on the front end. Put them over the counter edge in the work zone. Kitchen sink should have them on each side versus directly over so you don’t create shadows.

Admittedly I’m a bit confused as to where the fridge is as the plan and the renderings appear different. Regardless don’t do a 45 degree corner cabinet...

Halley & Co. I am puzzled by the lights on either side of the sink at the edge of the counter and their alignment with the pendants over the island. Same with the two on either side of the pantry. Four from the stairs to the back door? This seems overkill. Verging on “Swiss Cheese” ceiling. You are the pro; I am not. But this seems like too many lights.

I’m assuming a lot. 4” cans versus 6”. For even lighting I usually have my cans about 4’ oc evenly spread throughout the space. With white trims, silver baffles (NOT BLACK) and the correct bulb they fade into the background. The alternative is hot spots and shadows.

I ended up relocating the fridge to top left (next to slider going to patio) as I didnt feel there was enough counter space on right of range/stove next to fridge in the architect's plan. This helped make the range and chimney hood (with it's own lights) be more symmetrical.
