Need help for shoe bench in space outside front door

Hello wonderful members,

we Bought a new home recently and came To know about this forum which looks like a great forum of experienced and helping people. So this is my first post but not last though.


now our entry way is is very narrow and we were struggling to find something to go there for shoe storage, but then we realised there is some space outside our home on front door where we can put a bench with drawers which can also solve the purpose of storing daily use footwears plus it won’t ruin outside view of the house. Something like this




So here are the questions:

1. Is it a good idea? If yes do you have any suggestion which kind of as I and my husband have different opinions here. My husband want just drawers but I want bench with drawers.

2. Most of the storage which we liked are for indoors. Will those be good for this outdoor space.? If not is It good idea to make indoor furniture waterproof using sealant and paint?


3. Could anyone please suggest or share some links for the furniture with storage to go here? We would mainly prefer storage with drawers rather than lift up lid for ease.

    Hi. The problem with using indoor furniture outside is not from what is used to coat it but the material it is made from. Most indoor furniture is made from wood or chipboard stuff with that plasticy coating (conti board I thinks it’s called) and these won’t withstand the constant shrinking and swelling which will happen when exposed to outside conditions. Most outdoor furniture is made from a decent hardwood such as teak or timber that has been tanalised or pressure treated to deal with that exposure. Having said that you may be able to find storage that is designed for use in bathrooms where there is a high exposure of humidity. Moisture resistant mdf which can be painted or bamboo for instance. Another thing to think about is the shoes themselves, they may get mouldy or creepy crawlies living in them if not used frequently. I’ll have a little shop and see if I can find anything suitable.

      Took some searching for anything with drawers but this is a lovely example: https://rattanandteak.co.uk/larkin-garden-storage-bench-seat-120cm/ Most benches suitable for outdoors have the lift up lids and are a lot cheaper. Hopefully other Houzz users or yourself may have better luck with searching.

      Thanks Rachel, for your detailed response. now I understand the concept of indoor and outdoor furniture better. Definitely we will be using that to just store everyday shoes which will be in constant use. I will look for bathroom units. I was also looking for patio storage bench but most of them are either plastic ones or they have lift up lid storage. Anyway, Meanwhile I will wait for your shopping results and response from other members. Thanks a lot

      What Rachel says is correct. What is described as for indoor use isn’t suitable for outdoors. Personally I’d not want to store my footwear outside.

      You could look at the Ikea (Hemnes will perhaps fit in with your style?) shoe storage furniture. They're ideal for narrow hallways. That might be a better solution than storing your shoes outside.

      I too don’t think storing shoes outside is a good idea.

      I also don’t like the prospect of having to take my shoes off while still outside.

      Thanks all for your valuable suggestions. As per your advice, we are now thinking to look for a shoe storage for our narrow entryway. But also thinking to put a bench in that area with storage, won’t use for shoes, but don’t know for what.. so confused. Is the bench a good idea at all? It’s just a big space outside so looking for something to use this space and together increase look of our home.

      Hi Sonal I don't think it's a good idea to buy Ikea for outside maybe have your bench made by a joiner it can be made to measure rather than looking for something that will fit wood treated correctly can last a very long time

      I have been making furniture for over 34 years for a little extra you can have what you want
