Kitchen Cabinets

Thinking about changing colour of kitchen cabinets.
Any suggestions?

    Spending 8-10K to change the paint color on those when you are keeping the counters and splash is not getting you where you would need to be for resale appeal. I’d advise doing nothing. The buyers will likely want to do the complete makeover to the room that you don’t want to do.

      I had a very similar kitchen cabinet color. We painted them white (distant gray - it’s white don’t let name fool you) by Benjamin Moore. Made the kitchen fresh and clean. Do you plan on keeping backsplash and counter top? Hardware? I wonder if you can take the detailing off your hood for cleaner look and remove clock. Just a suggestion...good luck!

      We do plan on keeping backsplash & countertop as too expensive to change. Likely selling in next 1-2 years.
      Doubt if detailing on hood can be removed but will consider.

      We have an open floor plan and have placed glossy white tiles ( with a hint of grey veins) through out the living, dining areas, accented with a black border. Contemporary look. Now we need to figure out the kitchen! White tiles, black granite counters n backspash, white cabinets??? I havent seen many Houzz kitchen photos w white floor tiles

      Hello: There is the topic of using light colors in small and dark spaces in the larger, but ' this does not always work. The kitchens must like everything, make themselves as pleasant as they result to their users. Natural worktops, granite and wooden furniture, always give good results. It looks good, stone countertop or white quartz and oak cabinet. It is also worth a top of oak or imitation and white furniture. Colors can be used all. Preferably soft tones.       Due to a leak I need to repaint my kitchen, and surrounding walls which leads eventually to my living room . I need HELP to find a color that compliments my CREAM Kitchen cabinets and the living room color which is BERKSHIRE BEIGE. I think I want shade of white to brighten up my kitchen and family room and hopefully compliment the Berkshire Beige (BM paint color).

      They look dated with your wall color. Your cabinets and counters and backsplash all harmonize, but not with the paint. If you paint your cabinets a fresh new color then your counters and backsplash will look off.

      I would paint them a warm white, but also change the wall color. Grey isn't going to work with your warm granite and backsplash.

      Yes, the wall color is horrible with the cabinets, remove the trendy gray and embrace the cream

      If you paint, get a painter who does/specializes in this and, for heaven's sake, don't paint it yourself. I'd definitely recommend removing the clock, filling, sanding and painting the hood. Cost depends on your area, but it probably will not be $8-10K.

      It will be if the right Pro is employed, and the correct prep is done. You need a cabinet coatings specialist who uses a conversion varnish, and not a house painter who slaps on house paint. There is a lot of detail in that kitchen, and that takes it above the average 7-9K cost to do the job correctly.

      We certainly won’t be painting the cabinets ourselves. Changing the wall colour is not going to happen as this is a very open concept bungalow & that colour is everywhere on the main floor.

      On the boat with Sophie on this one, doing nothing is the best answer. Let the new owners worry about remodeling it if they wish to.

      After seeing the rest of the home and all the new info about selling soon I have to agree that doing nothing is probably the best bet. Sophie is right, it won't benefit you in the way you're hoping.

      I think you are spending money you will not get back at sale.I do agree the kitchen does not suit the rest of the spaces and no paint will fix that and the counters and backsplash really dictate any other color choice.. IMO whoever buys the house can do what they want to that kitchen, it would be a gut job for me.

      Not worth it if plan is to sell in 1-2 years. Others are not going to pay more than they would pay now just because the cabinets are painted - they still have the same backsplash, counter, and cabinet style which I agree with others is not contemporary enough for the space.

      The wall color is really not working with the cabinets but sounds like you are okay with that while you live in it. However, when it comes to putting house on market I recommend painting the walls - go with a nice creamy white or something that works with the cabinets. The new homeowners may want to replace the kitchen but first impressions are everything and that grey makes your cabinets look really yellow which leaves an impression of them being a bit dingy.

      I think that the color of the cabinets is being influenced by the wall color and the backsplash. Leave your cabinets as they are. Grey, however, is just a wrong choice for the walls. I'd suggest a soft white. As well, the backsplash does nothing for the cabinets. I'd suggest that you remove it. You could just replace the Sheetrock and have no tile. If you want tile, replace it with a simple soft color that works with your counters and cabinets. (I'd also suggest new counters, but I understand that would involve a lot of money that you won't recover at resale.). Although both the painting and a new backsplash will cost money, it shouldn't be too expensive and it will make your kitchen look much better when you sell. It won't mitigate that the styling is dated, but it will not scream out-of-date. And there are probably buyers out there who would love the cabinets exactly as they are. Good luck.

      Yin / Yang: Two halves that together complete wholeness. Yin and yang are also the starting point for change. When something is whole, by definition, it’s unchanging and complete. So when you split something into two halves – yin/yang, it upsets the equilibrium of wholeness. Both halves are chasing after each other as they seek a new balance with each other

      You have a warm tone traditional style of kitchen and you have a cool tone modern style every where else. Painting the cabinets are not going to make this space whole. To make the space whole, you need to paint the walls and introduce more traditional or eclectic pieces into the modern areas. I doubt you are willing to do either especially with a move on the horizon so just leave everything as is (as everyone has mentioned) and future buyers can see that the house has the potential to go either way.

      Back to the kitchen dilemma again. We decided to stay here another 5+ years & plan to have the kitchen cabinets professionally painted & the range hood cover remade. Any suggestions for cabinet colour would be appreciated.

      Before I read any comments I saw your first photo and my eye went right to the color of the grout in the tile. My suggestion would be to come close to that color and spend as little as possible if your plan is to sell even in 5 yrs. Of course get quality work done, just don’t go overboard. Do you know the color of your trim? If it’s not too bright white, you could do the cabinets in the same color, just a flatter sheen than the trim (meaning if the trim is semi gloss, do an eggshell on the cabinets). If that is too white, then a soft white should work with the trim. I agree with previous posts about simplifying the hood. The beaded moulding is enough detail. Let us know what you decide, and good luck!

      Thanks HU for your suggestions. I do think the trim is too white so have been looking at many whites to compliment the backsplash & wall colour. I’m most concerned that the granite won’t look right ....but really don’t want to spend the $$$$ to change it!

      I agree, I don’t think you would recoup your $$$$ if you changed the granite. I forgot about needing to stick with the gray walls due to the open concept. Are there any flecks of green/gray, blue/gray, or black in the granite that you could work off of to choose a cabinet paint? You can also keep your white trim and try maybe BM White Dove or a similar soft white on the cabinets, or a white/gray. Or, if it’s the gray walls that are just fighting the counters, backsplash, and cabinets it might be less costly to just paint. However, I still wouldn’t invest too much because as others have said, a future buyer will most likely want to change things anyway and whatever is in style now will probably be out by the time you sell. Do what you can and enjoy your home for you!

      Are you planning on removing the rope trim and some of the overlaid details, or just painting as is? If the latter, I'm not sure it'll give you the look you want. That said, I'd find a warm/soft white or a blue-green that would complement your gray walls, brown/warm counters, etc.

      Thx Gcubed for your comments. We aren’t planning to remove the overlaid details but are having the range hood cover remade in a simpler design.
      I will be looking for a soft white to hopefully tie in with the walls/ cabinets,etc.

      I think the cabinets are fine. I wouldn’t go through the ordeal and expense of painting the cabinets. They’ll never be as durable and finished as factory painted cabinets. How about a new countertop in a beautiful honed Pietra Del Cardoso, Absolute Black, Jet or Virginia Mist, or soapstone with a straight edge?

      Decided to go ahead with having cabinets professionally painted & range hood cover remade. I’m very happy with the results....looks like a new kitchen!

      The yellow, beige and gray are not harmonious. The gray wall color clashes with the counter, backsplash and cabinets.
      If you choose to paint the cabinets, use the lightest cream or the white in the granite.

      If I were going to change anything, I would remove both backsplashes. One backsplash is best
      for any kitchen. The short backsplash alone would not protect the wall, and the upper backsplash has a pinkish tinge which clashes with the counter. Select a solid-color tile for the new backsplash
      in a light-to-medium color found in the granite counter.

      Nicely done! Since you are staying and you’re happy, just leave everything the way it is. (When you go to sell, don’t get surprised or offended if your realtor suggests painting the whole house white. Mine suggested it and the house looked fresh and amazing.)

      I'm late to the post but congrats on a great color choice. What a huge impact the cabinet paint had on the overall feel. I think you "cooled down" the cabinet color just enough to make it harmonize with the walls and rest of the house design really well. We have a similar dilemma, darker granite counters with dingy looking cabinets that could all stand to be gutted but the budget isn't there. Seeing this project was soooooo helpful to me. Thanks!

      If it was my kitchen I would do something about range hood first - removing clock would be a start. I have same color cabinets I think - honey maple. Change your counter top and backsplash to one cohesive material. Whatever you use on counter - use on backsplash too and bring right up to the cabinets.. We put in Azurite granite counter and backsplash and love it. The cabinets look great with a darker stone as well. We used White Valley granite in master bath which is lighter and not as dramatic. In my experience painted cabinets look terrible after awhile and you will be trying to touch up all that chipped paint.

      You, the homeowner, made the best choice. I wouldn't have believed how much better the cabinets look now. When it's time to sell have your real estate agent stage the house with more traditional furniture and buyers will think it was all meant to be. Congratulations!
