White Oak Floors - Choice of finish to minimize/stop yellowing

mnach21
hace 5 años

We are building a new house and love the look of natural, unstained, wide plank white oak hardwood flooring. All the sample finishes and photos we look at were newly installed and there are no yellow tones in the wood. I know a water based polyurethane is recommended to minimize yellowing. Are there recommendations on a specific water based polyurethane that can be used to minimize/stop yellowing over time? Any other recommendations like a sealer application prior to application of the polyurethane? We love the look when it is new, but don't want to regret our decision if we have yellow floors in a few years.

We offer a floor that is finished with an invisible oil, which gives it an unfinished look.

mnach21, something like this? The light whitewash will help to minimize the yellow tones in white oak.

This topic comes up here regularly. You've got some good answers already but if you search the Flooring forum using "white oak loba invisible" or "white oak raw" you'll find those discussions along with pictures of the results some people have gotten.

FYI I think G&S meant Bona NaturalSeal and Naturale or Traffic. Bona makes an assortment of water based sealers that go from slightly white to slightly amber. Using one of them with a non-yellowing Bona urethane will probably achieve the color you want and provide a surface that is durable and cleanable with readily available products.

Great! Thanks for everyone's advice and input. I feel much better about going this route now and not having to worry about future yellowing. Thanks!

When do u recommend bleaching prior to staining and sealing?

@ resf102 - bleaching is a process that is very expensive. You are welcome to bleach if you feel your wood floors are too dark in their NATURAL state (ie. after they have been stripped of their finish and are sitting raw on the floor).

Bleaching can be done to tone down red oak...so that it is ready to turn gray (as in the stain you want is gray but you started life with red oak = not easy to achieve).

Bleaching comes down to whether or not you have a raw wood floor that will achieve the COLOUR you are after.

So...what is the wood you are working with?

@SJ McCarthy is the Loba 2K Supra AT the sealant & the top coat or which one is the sealant you use first to minimize the tannin pull and which one is the finish coat?

The sealant is different from the polyurethane. Loba sells WS EasyPrime. That's the sealant for white oak in the Loba line up.
