Window cover for large patio window/door

The picture is taken from the front door entrance and shows my living room. I am wondering what to do with the large window/sliding door to my backyard. We have high ceilings and an additional window is above the patio door as shown. Iam not sure whether to do curtains and if then just short curtain rods on each side instead of all the way? Would curtains be hung above the upper window? Currently we get a lot of sun in the afternoon which is disruptive at the dinner table in the back but I don't really want to cover up the view of the canyon. Since we still might put up a pergola that issue might solve itself and it would be more of a question of making it look super nice inside. I was leaning towards white or light linens? Would love to hear some new suggestions or feedback! (Sorry for the dirty windows...it's on this busy mom's list haha)

Thank you. I had never heard about traverse rods but that sounds like a great idea. Will look into it. :)

Thank you for the pictures. So helpful to see what other people are doing. My husband would prefer to leave it as is but I feel like it should have curtains? Should I keep them white or maybe go with am oatmeal color linen to warm up the space?

White or oatmeal linen would be a beutiful touch and can be hung stationary on both sides.
