Project started with wanting to update tired 70 ' s house by redecorating walls now wish to remove current fire and insert one into the wall to make room look more modern. Chimney breast is 11 cms wide. What are your thoughts .All ideas comments appreciated. The chimney breast will eventually be red and the fires we have researched so far are between 60 - 90 cms wide. Current fire is slotted into hole behind it which I belueve has housed a gas fire and coal fire in the past . Thank you in advance. Alison

You probably have to remove what is there and see what you actually have in the way of recess and flue. Bear in mind that both the modern ones you have posted would need structural work to widen or raise the opening in the wall which would add to the cost. We have used built-in fireplaces from these people: http://www.stovax.com You need to contact a good installer near you - there are quite a lot of technical issues with installing a modern fireplace such as:

Gas supply/position of tap or will it be electric or real (wood burning)?

    Electric/remote ignition

Is there a flue liner in place - does chimney need a CCTV survey

    Ventilation of the recessed box

Its a good idea - it will make the room more spacious. If you are installing a real fire you will want to keep a hearth underneath it - not carpet.
