Color/pattern for back of shelves?

I cannot decide what color to paint our cherry wood built-in therefore I want to make it more "updated" by putting fabric or paper in the back of the shelves and possibly sides of the shelves. We can paint at some point but at least this could be a good temporary project. What color would you do if the walls are off white ivory (which may not be forever!)

Sorry, I misunderstood. I would only use color in the back if you are painting the entire unit. If you are leaving it cherry, then just look for some more colorful items to put on the shelves.

I'm having trouble finding examples in a similar wood color, most examples with different color backs are white.

I think I would either paint it or let it be -- i don't really see a gain to putting a color or pattern at the backs of the sections, and it will make decorating the shelves a lot more complex. As a test, cut up some wrapping paper and tape the squares into a few sections to see how it feels -- try a few solid and a few patterned, and I'll bet at the end of the exercise you have a bit of a headache.

I'd paint it the same white as the kitchen cabinets and do either a blue/white to play off the rug, a kelly green or the poppy

    or even a gold

Or, paint the whole thing a rich, deep Indigo

Paint it the same white as the kitchen cabinets. Accents can provide color or texture with metals or glass.

Erin J could you please clarify - are you painting the entire cabinet or just the back walls of it?

I was looking for a nonpermanent solution- adding fabric or paper to the back of the shelves.

To comment on the "paint the whole thing white" - although I like white, the TV being black will definitely stand out. Which is why I was leaning towards a medium gray... If it was to be painted. One quote from a specialist was about $800.

Cut pieces of foam core to fit the backs. Either paint the foam core, or paper it ( scrap book papers are very nice). Then just push the foam core into place. You generally do not need to affix it....it just stays in place

Gosh just go for it, do it yourself with chalk paint, off white with perhaps charcoal back wall or a navy. I would not pay $800 to have it painted. I've done a lot of painting with chalk paint, no prep really needed and looks great. I've even painted a sectional sofa with chalk paint, no hassle
