Victorian hallway & open plan family room - inspiration sought

numbland
hace 6 años

Victorian family home - the wood chip has (finally!) been stripped and the walls skimmed. Wood burning stove has just been installed in the stone fireplace - the stone finish of which isn't really in-keeping with the rest of the Victorian fireplaces in the house. This is the first room to be refurbished - all other downstairs rooms lead off it - so it's an important part of the rest of the house. Inspiration needed for a colour scheme that can possibly run through the house (we'd like it to be light, the window is east facing, the hall and entryway facing south). Also ideas for the flooring? Fireplace? Lighting?

Nice house, any idea what is under the carpet in the hallway? If it's nice original tiling then I would absolutely keep/restore it and base your colour scheme around that.

I wish it was a nice tiled floor! Unfortunately we've got a wooden floor - which has seen much better days - not much chance of restoring it and it runs into a concrete floor just before the main room.

Ah, that's a shame. A wooden floor or wood/tiling combo would look nice tho I think, something similar to inspiration images in previous comments.

    Hi there!

Lovely pictures - looks like it has the potential to be a gorgeous space, especially once that floor has gone!

I really like some of the above photo suggestions - particularly the ceiling lantern lighting in the hallways. We actually have a couple that are very similar, available:

William IV brass and bronze lantern

    Art Deco brass lantern

    Large brass 19th century lantern

    Best of luck!

I love the stonework and it seems to be a stunning blank canvas. What sort of vibe are you after? Are you a collector of interesting things such as art, rugs etc? Also, your ideas books show lots of storage, is that an issue? If this were my house I would be mixing old with new.

Thanks very much for the comments, it is a great blank canvas - we're very lucky, the whole house is in need of renovation and the hallway is central to the house - so it's important we get it off to the right start! What vibe are we after - we have a young family, this is 'the family room' so it needs to be practical, open and welcoming and is at the centre of the home.

There's a separate, more formal living room (next year's project!). We want to add light, we like using traditional materials but not necessarily traditionally Victorian (we think of dark, heavy patterns...?). The previous owners had dark oak furniture and the dark red carpet and woodchip - just about everywhere... made it feel gloomy, so we're against that! My idea books - possibly misleading - storage isn't an issue, I was thinking about fitting a bookcase to one of the large blank walls to break the large space up and provide a feature.

Thoughts on a colour scheme to compliment the the original coving/doors and then walls would be welcome?! Light, complimentary to the traditional feel but modern... Not sure if that helps!

    Thanks again!

There is something about these images from Treverra Farm that is so evocative. I know your project doesn't have beams, but for me it is the mix of materials, texture and limited palette that make it so lovely.

Hi do you have any more pictures of the house or a floorplan? Our hallway is identical to yours but looks like your hall wall for the 2nd reception room has been removed whereas we still have it but are thinking or removing!

Hello R Wilson - sorry, only just seen your post, yes second reception room wall removed at some point in the past, so open plan victorian which is unusual! Walls done, on with the herringbone flooring as I type this.....
