Industrial vs Scandinavian

Doing up my new house and planning to choose a theme for my living room. Interested in both industrial or Scandinavian style. However they both look quite similar to me. What is the difference between industrial and scandinavian style?

    Hi Jason,

When juxtaposed, these are two very contrasting elements.
Industrial is usually cold and harsh, while Scandinavian tends to exude warmth and softness.

Here's a write up on Industrial interiors:
    http://www.impressiveinteriordesign.com/modern-industrial-interior-design-definition-ideas/

"Perhaps born out of necessity in trying to convert old or abandoned warehouses, factories and barns into spaces conducive to urban living, this design style celebrates engineering and mechanical ingenuity like little else."

And here's a quick one on how to create a Scandinavian interior:
    https://www.decorilla.com/online-decorating/scandinavian-interior-design-tips/

"With a focus on simplicity, minimalism and functionality, this design movement which emerged in the 1950s has added an appreciation for craftsmanship and understated elegance in homes."

All the best for your new place!

    Great points Kevin!

Jason, it's been a couple of months since a reply, but if you or anyone is still wondering about this.

It's not surprising that in SG, Scandinavian and Industrial styles have very often merged into a hybrid concept: clean lines that combine with raw aesthetics have become the dominant style. Some would even say it's too common and overdone.

Here are two stories on Houzz that show designers merging the best of both styles, but also taking it forward with design cues that stand out from the rest.

Hi Jason, they are both different in terms of "sight" and "touch".

These 2 styles have been in trend for the last 2 years or so. Industrial tends to have darker tones, with metal, concrete and raw finishes as the features.

Scandinavian has lighter tones, with a combination of wood/natural, fabrics etc.

Since you like both themes, you may even consider a combination of both based on your preferences!
