Dark dining table and chairs on a light timber floor?
Hi, Houzzzzz,
Five weeks till I move into my new place, and my head is buzzing with decorating dilemmas!
Would like your thoughts...
My living space (open plan dining and lounge) has light coloured timber floors (pictured).
the kitchen (off to the side) has white island and cupboards.
I want to buy a new sofa, in a neutral colour or this cute blue sofa.... but that all depends on so many factors - do I have to buy new pieces to go with cute blue sofa... might just stick with neutral.
Moving is so expensive, trying to save money where I can by keeping my existing furniture (coffee table, tv unit, bedsides, dining) which are all dark!! Grr.
I've looked at heaps of photos and every one seems to have light coloured furniture with light colours floors.
Would my current dark coloured furniture suit this space? I have uploaded a photo of a dining set that is similar to mine.

hace 8 añosI'll have the same dilemma when I eventually move.
The first thing that I will be doing is buying some large, neutral coloured rugs, probably jute or sisal (or similar), to help juxtapose the light timber floors with the dark timber furniture. I think having a "break" between the two timber styles/colours is a good idea. I'll personally be aiming for some kind of combined Japanese and Scandinavian interior design.
Here are a few photos which I'm intended on referencing to create an aethestically pleasing space with my existing furniture (until I can afford to replace it over time):

Good luck. I'd like to see what you eventually do.

It's like a domino effect... replace one item, have to replace ALL the items hahaha. I can't even upgrade my TV to a larger one yet, cos I will need to replace tv unit with larger one... but what colour TV unit? IDK, yet! HAHAHA.
The idea of a rug sounds like one that is affordable in the meantime :)

hace 8 añosÚltima modificación: hace 8 añosI agree with Barbara. Take what you have and see how it looks.
If all of your floors are as in the photo then I think the dark furniture will compliment it. Light coloured furniture would disappear.
I like the blue of the sofa. You could still use your dark furniture beside it.

hace 8 añosI agree with the others, move in with your existing furniture, live there for a while...recover financially and emotionally from the move. If you want lighter furniture can you paint existing until you can replace, or maybe you will not want to. Check out chalk paint. Covers everythingCA Design
hace 8 añosThere is nothing wrong with using dark furniture on a light wooden floor and more often than not it creates a wonderful contrast. The only time I would really recommend using light furniture on a light wood floor is if your room is small, It will give the feeling of more space when you keep to the same tones in colour however then you need to bring in some colour with accessories, rugs and more to create more interest.
The blue sofa is beautiful and could look great in that space!Neeno Nguyen agradeció a CA Design
