Oak furniture in small bedroom

My daughter has a small bedroom and has oak wardrobe, cupboard and desk. We have just had a new taupe carpet fitted and looking for advice on what colour to paint the walls so the furniture does not overpower the room. (She doesn't want a neutral colour such as white!)

Hi, just wondering if it's new oak furniture or old pieces? I.e would you be adverse to painting them?

Hi there, I'll be changing curtains and bedding so a blank canvas in that respect. It's not real oak just has the look. I did want to change to all white furniture but have blown the budget to get a good decorator in.

Hoping to 'loose' the pink shelving unit too. Girls of eleven have too much stuff!

We designed a very small bedroom for a young girl some time back. The furniture we used was white, but to add some interest we used a very bright wallpaper on just one wall with some nice bright bedding, everything else was kept very neutral.

Pale pink, or a white with a very light hint of colour in it

How about wall decals- something that can be peeled off and changed as she grows up.

Hi Catherine. If you feel the furniture is obtrusive you could try painting with annie Sloan chalk paint in an old white. No prep work is needed so it's easy. The neutral carpet should work with most colours. As Jonathan has said it's best to decorate a room that will grow with her to minimise future costs although 11 year old girls quite often want a grown up room! Duck egg might be a good choice or a more grown up hot pink or chalk pink (just a little hot pink though!). Or you could continue with creams and taupe and accessorise in other colours. What are her favourite colours and interests?

Her favourite colour is aqua blue and I did mention a duck egg accent to her which she quite like the sound of. She is a big reader so hoping to source some 'floating bookshelves' for the wall on the right and will lose the existing pink shelving.

Decorating a kid's room is definitely something to be imaginative with - we've got an Ideabook on girls' bedrooms that aren't pink if that takes your fancy!

A blue color would balance the darker wood of the furniture

Have you thought of painting the furniture instead? I had clients with expensive but very heavy furniture so we enhanced the room by painting the furniture

Having 2 girls of 16 and 12 I would agree with those advising to stay away from the pink, they grow out of it at 12ish. I have just re done my 12 year old's room in greys and gold rose. We chalk painted a pine bed in greys and it looks great
