Should I add paint to this to make the details stand out?

I moved into my new house last year and this Radiator Cabinet was in the living room as you see it now, I like the white but i was thinking if i paint some of the details (the vines and the animals) they may stand out better. what do you think?

You could glaze it, maybe with a warm grey made with white and raw umber. If you rub off most of the glaze it will pretty much only stay in the crevices and not change the color much, but will accentuate the marvelous detail in the radiator cover.

okay I think that settles it ;) I think it'll stay as is for now. I was only considering the paint because i have to get right beside it to really see the small details. but thats not a bad thing i guess. thanks for the advice!

Ok, so I'll be the outlier here. I'd paint the radiator black and everything else (rock wall and trim) the same color as the walls. It will integrate the space better with the clean lines of the doors and your rug.

Do not paint the grill. It was meant to be one color and looks perfect the way it is. Use it as your inspiration and decorate around it to bring out it's true beauty. The room in blacks, white's and gold's would be stunning.

Hmm, what about putting a black background material behind the grill. inset about a foot behind? it would create a uniform dark background. Right now its on a white wall so it tends to confuse the eye.

disfromage said it first and I suggest the same -- a glaze that you wipe down so that it only accents the shadows and brings forth the design detail. And yes, if there's anything peeking out from under the decorative grill, obscuring with dark paint or screen will further highlight the delightful design. It's beautiful!

I would leave it white, unless you did soft grey over white and and then wipe off while still wet, like shabby chic. I think it's the wall above that makes it seem a bit busy, an interesting piece all the same

...although from the front-on photo you just posted, it's beautiful untouched. I'd make it the focal point of your room!
I might look to William Morris for art inspiration, but with a modern presentation.

You have a beautifully detailed piece there its refined and elegant :)
The painting above it is beautiful as well but doesn't belong there ,you need something different for it .

It is SOOO beautiful as it is. However, if you do decide to paint it, I might would go paint in somewhere between a silvery-gray color to a chalky light-black. Just my opinion! :-)

Try polished pewter for a more modern effect, although i would also change the painting and lamp, respectively.

I do NOT like the stone above it.
And I'd probably paint the grill black to nicely fit in with the trim.

Like it white , but the pewter above is awesome - very art deco.
The barn picture and lamp don't work with the detail of the register. And the carpet should be changed, perhaps if you reconsidered changing these, the register would be more of a focal point.
Here are a few examples of tall lamps that would look awesome. A throwback piece of art from the 20's and a black and white grecian key area rug. What do you think?
The black will go sooo well with the black trim on your beautiful wood doors.

You might want to consider very lightly dry brushing or distressing it with a pewter or graphite. Use very sparingly and do it randomly to mimic aging and antiquing.

Hi---I absolutely LOVE it as is. My question to you is, does this fit with your design style? It's quite ornate. If you want to make it stand out more, then paint the stone black-that will do it.
A large vertical mirror (make sure the reflection is pleasant) or painting will add interest. I like the idea of a figurative piece of art---this one is a bit on the "dark side", but I thought it most intriguing... Good Luck!

Do. Not. Repaint. Every layer added further obscures the sharpness of the design. Aging will necessitate touch-up, and at that point you may want glazing to bring back the dimension, but right now you have perfect high-relief heaven: step away from the radiator!!

Yes, i agree with stuidio10001. An added paint layer would obstruct the detail. The best choice would be to leave the radiator alone. The pewter color was just an alternative suggestion.

Neat project! That radiator is such a great visual centerpiece. I would leave it painted the ecru color, and not add anything to the metal. The pure white on the stone behind it is distracting because it is so harsh, especially against all the black electronics. A black granite top might help disguise some of the electronics, and make it feel less busy on top. I'd also paint the stone a darker color maybe paint the two vertical black pieces of trim next to the radiator the same color of the wall. I've done a mock-up to show what painting the iron black would look like. First, I'll post one with the way some suggestions might look. I like Natalie's idea of some different art. I'd simplify by changing out the lamp for a contemporary clean-lined floor lamp.

Here's the look if you just painted it black. I think it loses a lot of it's beauty without the contrast.
  • Lee Ann Freeman

After reconsideration, the only suggestion I have is a light glazing to bring out the detail a bit more. And, I agree that a bolder piece of art above will permit the piece to "speak" more clearly. Good luck with your stunning home.

I have a question? I've work on older homes before and the paint on some of the old registers had lead in them. I would advise you have this checked out and have it removed by specialists. Sorry to mention this, but it just occurred to me... let me know. (Better safe than sorry).

The black frames behind it doesn't work for me at all it takes away instead of giving ,can someone paint over that and leave the ornate piece alone ,let's see what it looks like . I agree with the no paint still.

I agree with Genevieve that the two heavy black verticals create a top-heavy, busy area that is distracting. I think two are speakers sitting on the "mantle", and two are the painted moldings on either side of the stone. Just getting the speakers down on the floor and off the mantle would clean up the look. For my taste, I would paint all the woodwork and doors one lighter color, and then darken the walls with a tasteful richer tone. That would make the room look richer and larger.

The piece itself is very elegant, but does not fit this room decor. The area rug is dragging the eye down. The heavy black poles on top looks industrial, door are contemporary, stone behind the art is from a different era. It more confusing than eclectic. Decide what direction you want to go. I suggest to remove everything from the top of this nice piece, add an elegant lighting, big art or mirror that goes with the radiator cover details. Walls needs attention too.

I think the contrast level in the room is really extreme adding too much complication.. I'd simplify by painting the trim in the room the same color as the grill, and paint a richer color on the walls.
  • Chroma Natrix

PS, when I said paint the stone earlier, I was referring to the stone on the wall behind the radiator, not the marble top. If going black, I'd replace it with granite or black marble.

Chroma---like the idea of painting the trim and doors same as the grill-looks beautiful. Would love to suggest a wall color, but haven't a clue as to what else is in the space---I do see a chair w/ottoman... :) More pics perhaps?

Thanks everyone for the comments thus far! There is a lot to take in, just so we are all on the same page I would like to say I am a single guy with a modest income and any changes i make will have to take that into consideration. that being said, I do agree that some changes will have to be done :) the electronics will be removed as will the painting, I will search for a new lamp and consider changing the colour of the stone wall. I will not be painting any of the original wood, the trim I would be okay with changing. the rug was a new purchase so I am hesitant to part with it right now. I will add a couple more pictures tomorrow without the electronics cluttering the space.

the house itself is a late 1800's american 4 square (?) , the radiator cabinet ,I've been told, is as old as the house and most likely created in my town again in the late 1800s, several of my neighbors have the same style of cabinet in their homes.

Thanks again for all your advice, it is really appreciated!

TODD -You're absolutely on point with not wanting to mess with the era and architecture of the home - and I understand the budget thing all too well. The suggestions on here should now reflect your concerns and help you make it as great as possible. (Can't wait to see new pics). Would also like to see the rest of your home -- it looks like a treasure! (Where do you live?).

The radiator cover is a phenomenal, gorgeous central focus for the room just like it is, and anything else that isn't very simple and classic just creates a confused look.
