A staircase does more than just connect floors — it can be a striking architectural feature in your home. Floating stairs with minimalist glass railings are a popular choice among designers right now, and it’s easy to see the appeal. They not only create a chic, contemporary look, but they maximize light and views so your home feels spacious and airy. Here, we step inside four spectacular homes to see how a showstopping floating staircase took them to the next level.
Modern Elegance
A tricky layout can present more than a few design challenges when it comes to installing architectural features like staircases, as this newly built home in Knoxville, Tennessee, shows. The retiree homeowners wanted an elegant and modern staircase design that would complement their contemporary home and accent the room’s soaring 22-foot-high ceilings and 20-foot custom windows. But the area for the stairs was an awkward, 15-square-foot space that required a switchback design with two landings to reach the second level.
The couple searched long and hard for a great-looking and practical design that would be up to the task, and they landed on Viewrail’s FLIGHT floating stairs with red oak treads coupled with Vedera glass railings.

The treads add warmth and texture to the predominantly white entry area, while the sleek glass railings optimize natural light and keep the focus on the stunning windows, while also providing safety for users ascending to the second level. The glass railings extend to the upper landing, creating a visual connection between the two levels of the home.
Just as impressive, the homeowners were able to install the stairs themselves with just one day’s help from their son. They couldn’t be happier with the result: “The stairs are absolutely the showpiece of the house,” one of them says.
Bonus tip: If you love the idea of a floating staircase but would rather leave it to a professional to install, Viewrail offers an efficient and cost-friendly measurement and installation service throughout most of the country.

Bringing the Outside In
When it came to the new staircase that would form the centerpiece of their Clearwater, Florida, home, these owners knew exactly what they wanted: a style that not only worked with but emphasized their open-plan layout and didn’t impede light and views through their supersized floor-to-ceiling windows. Viewrail’s FLIGHT floating stairs, with wood treads and Vedera glass railings, proved to be the ideal design.

The 3-inch-thick distressed blonde treads pair beautifully with the owners’ decor, while the glass railings provide the open, airy feel and unimpeded outdoor views they were after.
The stair system’s minimalist detailing — each tread slice conceals the glass fasteners so there are no unsightly bolts — makes the staircase appear to float in midair. The glass railings extend upstairs, opening up views from the first floor and allowing the owners’ artwork and statement lighting to sing.

A Warm Welcome
The minimalist-meets-rustic floating staircase in this home in St. Pete Beach, Florida, makes a bold statement the moment you step through the front door. The rich grain of the walnut treads creates a striking contrast against the creamy floor tiles and textured walls, while the floating design and glass railings allow natural light to flow from the front window to the hallway behind the stairs, making the entire space feel bright and open.

It’s also a smart choice for a slender entry such as this one with different floor materials across two levels. While a solid railing would have visually narrowed the space, the glass railings virtually disappear, instantly making the space feel wider.
Meanwhile, the matte charcoal stringer (or “spine") of the staircase suits the pared-back minimalism of the tiled ground floor, while the walnut treads blend seamlessly with the wood flooring upstairs — a win both upstairs and down.

With its huge, vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows and concrete floors, this ultramodern Florida home needed a staircase that would pack a punch visually while harmonizing with its surroundings. Viewrail’s walnut FLIGHT floating stairs fit the bill perfectly. The floating design and glass railings allow the sun’s rays to filter through the space from every angle and provide uninterrupted views of the patio and mature trees.

The intricate grain of the walnut treads and rail capping add warmth to the space and soften the steel and concrete elements while sitting comfortably alongside the wood paneling. A stair stringer in charcoal steel matches the window frames, creating a sense of cohesion between the different architectural features. The glass railing has been carried through to the upper level to ensure that the gorgeous views can be fully enjoyed wherever you are in the home.
Bonus tip: When choosing a finish for your floating stairs, it’s important to factor in the colors and finishes in the rest of the room, as the owners have done here. For stairs that blend into the design, select treads with a subtle wood grain in a color that matches the surrounding flooring or wood paneling. If you want your stairs to make more of a statement, consider treads with a richer grain in a color that contrasts with the nearby floor and wall finishes.

I wonder how many owners that went with glass railings would swap them out in a heartbeat for the modern black cable railings? Keeping the glass clean, especially with kids in the house, would take Herculean effort.
These kinds of stairs and railings are definitely best suited for families without babies/small kids. They do look stunning and unique, however, keeping the glass clean is extra work unless you don't mind them being smeared.
