Pacifica Landscapes was founded by David Baxter (Baxter) a fifth generation New Zealander from Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island. He has spent his career designing and building landscapes and gardens in the Pacific Northwest, Australia and New Zealand. Working on design and construction projects ranging from residential landscapes to large parks and commercial developments and with a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture he has developed a belief that everyone's life can and should be enhanced by the quality of the environment that surrounds them. Established in 2011. Since establishment we at Pacifica have focused on creating landscapes for home owners in the greater Seattle area. From outdoor kitchens to fire-pits spotted with smores. From patios and pools enjoyed with friends to simple bubbling rock water features or a bench under a tree on which to read. We have created places large and small where people have created happy memories with family and neighbors. We love to build places where you can build memories!

Aaron Edwards is a registered Landscape Architect in both New York and Washington State with over 20 years experience designing, studying and altering the landscape. The practice of Landscape Architecture has led him from designing roof terrace gardens in Manhattan and Buenos Aires, planning large estates in New York and Connecticut and eventually brought him back home to the Pacific Northwest. How do I design? It’s a process that changes with every space, but always springs from a set of rudimentary questions and observations. IT’S NOT A GARDEN, IT’S A SET OF EXPERIENCES I like to start by asking what is the experience you’d like to have in the space? Do you want to read quietly or run around with a dog or a ball? Create and present a gourmet meal? Host a wedding? Lie in a hammock? To offer an experience, I will design the space around a dominant theme, choosing plants and accessories and materials to unify the theme and support the style of garden you prefer. LET THE LAND TAKE A STAND Study the landform. Where are there slopes? Where does water accumulate or flow? What possibilities are offered by the shape of the space? What borrowed scenery is available? Answers to these questions create opportunities and limitations that inform the design possibilities. Working with the land, not against it, is a basic precept of sustainable space planning. GOOD BONES What shapes and structures will most enhance the space? Does the space require geometric design? Rectilinear or curvilinear? Or is the space more organic, lending itself to more biomorphic, abstract design. Will walls or terraces or arbors help hold the space together? Would a vertical garden element (living wall) add dimension and enhance the design? These are the bones of the garden, and should reflect the theme and shape of the space itself. DETAILS MATTER – COLOR, TEXTURE AND MATERIAL CHOICES Color and texture are important, of course. Where are small leaf sizes required, and where will large forms punctuate the design most effectively? Where does the garden need to be brightened? Cooled with darker, cooler shades? How will pavers accentuate the color of the home or the plant materials? Artfully designed containers can contribute design elements in otherwise overlooked spaces. Container materials range from terra cotta, corten steel, aluminum, stone, brick, glazeware, wood and many more. Which choices will add cohesion to the design plan? Which materials and plants will promote the most sustainable design? We will examine these questions together to create the spaces and experiences you, your family or your clients will find most comfortable for years to come.
