When tried-and-true materials and configurations are not up to the job, their staff - and especially founding Principal Greg Kingsley, PhD. – rise to the challenge. On a recent museum project, this involved engaging with overseas specialists to develop an innovative variety of plywood, have initial samples produced and tested, and integrating the results to realize a truss design that would not otherwise have been feasible.
On another project they were able to reduce the cost of the building structure by several million dollars thru changes to shear wall and column locations, making the geometry more regular and efficient, with minimal impact on the architectural layout. A full-story truss on that same project allowed program requirements to be met without adding more floor area to the building, again saving the owner a substantial sum.
Finally, KL&A’s ability to engage in the shop drawing and fabrication processes provides our clients (the building owners) with new options to maintain quality while controlling costs.
