Certainteed is the manufacturer of asphalt shingles that we specify on every job. Other manufacturers have certified contractor programs that allow the contractor to extend workmanship warranties backed up by the manufacturer. After 26 years in the roofing & siding industry, I opened my own roofing company in 2009. As a very small contractor at that time, I needed to make a decision to choose one manufacturer to work with. Any legitimate contractor who installs shingles weekly, has his roofers and foreman take the open book test, has current liability and workers comp insurance, pays his men legally and is willing to do the right job by the book, including ventilation, can qualify after one year of screening at a lower warranty plateau. We include the Certainteed 5-star warranty with every job. Certainteed warrants the material for 50 years and all of the labor and material is included (NDL), is transferrable for the first fifteen years and they guarantee our workmanship for 25 years. There are additional materials involved and in doing things by the book, we are almost always upgrading the intake ventilation and always replacing step-flashing. Using the Certainteed Shingle Applicator Manual on our presentation and pointing out that every shingle manufacturer reduces the warranty to 10 years prorated for improperly ventilated roofs, closing the job is the next logical step. They recently started doing random inspections in our area to insure installers are doing the "Right Job, Right" For the homeowner, it should be a no-brainer, that at least one of the contractors they interview should be a Select Shingle Master and includes all of the work for the 5-star warranty. If they choose to go with the cheaper job, (less material and less work included), they will know what compromises they are making, or they can educate their contractor to get the right job. It is too large of an investment to make a poor choice of contractors or materials.
