Not sure what happened with this company, but they displayed a lack of knowledge and care while handling our renovations. A few years now and many issues, many imperfections. So many good reviews online yet it seems we got the short end of the stick as there is no way our job was done right. Sure my wife and I were naive and thought we would get a dream kitchen, but now I have learned so much from doing things myself and having other contractors in that WOW did we ever get ripped off. Certainly would not happen again as I know better, but they really took advantage of us. They screwed up our hardwood floor, drywall, and cabinets installation, poorly planned our countertops causing us to do it our selves, misinformed us on cabinet doors, insulation and plumbing, broke our furnace and busted water pipes flooding our electrical panel. I am concerned on stuff I did not see. My wife and I were very busy (each had jobs and a 1 year old) and never had renovation experience. We were very naive and were being very nice and polite. We paid them (but should not have and stood up). They lied to use on multiple occasions, were aggressive at times, and always had an excuse for the issues we pointed out. DO NOT USE. So many other companies to choose from. We got played, I hope no one else does.
My wife and I paid over $100,000K figures for an IWE partial kitchen/main floor renovation of a 1977 built house. We had just purchased the house, had a 1-year old, and both with demanding jobs, and had zero renovation experience. We decided to go with IWE as they were very convincing (turns out the sales guy did not even work with them bust was a hired gun) that they could deliver a high-quality product in a few months. They were significantly more money that the few independent contractors we talked with, but we felt the ‘sale of piece of mind’ was worth it, we did not want a horror story renovation. Well we got one. This company is a total joke. Expensive and delivering a ‘worse than do it yourself’ quality installation. These was no transparency from them, many issues during the renovation negating the ‘hassle-free all-in-one’ service we wanted/paid for, and the final installation of drywall, floors, and cabinets just terrible (all unlevel/uneven leading to issues). We should have known something was wrong from the start. After two visits to our house and reviewing the scope of work they said they would do a high-level transformation for under $80,000 (our budget). We paid $1600 to get a complete design (should have known this was a scam). Well a design and vague contract was presented to us with a price of $120,000. Shocking, should have walked away, but we felt committed (wife wanted this renovation done) and settled on a $100,000 price with us doing several things (some demolition, painting, floors, baseboards, doors, appliances, dishwasher/sink installation and plumbing). Looking back the contract was so vague we never should have signed. NOTE TO ALL, ensure any contract is extremely detailed, down do the level of floors and type/number of outlets covers). They tried so often to not do work that we thought was included. It was such a battle every week. In the end the final product is just OK looking but riddled with imperfections. Below are a few specific details on some major issues:
Design: Overall not bad. Some great points (cabinets around the sink) and some low points. The island is large and L-shaped and honestly just not right for the room. Clearly better designs, but I guess that is on us as we wanted an L-shape, but maybe a more experienced contractor would have given more options. Big sour point is the space over the oven. Originally, we wanted a microwave but IWE said that is tacky and a hood fan would be much better. We too their advice and settled on a hood fan with box. While the fan is fine, the box is one piece, crooked, and a panel instead of doors above the fan. The MW sits in the island cabinet. We have a major lack of space and thus putting the MW above the oven with cabinet above the MW (like almost all houses and what we originally suggested) would have been best. THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING and ARE NOT GOOD AT INTERIOR DESIGN. We should have better planned and hired a real interior designer.
Floor: We purchased our solid hardwood from a bigbox store and got a quote to install at $3800. Owing to issues with scheduling we asked IWE if they could do the floors, they said yes and quoted $4500. We assume they would do a high-quality job and agreed to the higher price. Floors we installed on a unlevel and/or not cleared of debris subfloor. Our floors are now slated in many spots, have large bumps or depressions in many key walking areas, many large gaps between boards, many lose and flexible boards, many boards not level leading to sharp edges. Floors were installed to tight leading to bowing in the summer and significant flex. Many floorboards were installed without being inspected first thus boards with checks, defects, and small sizes are scattered about. Boards around fireplace and stairs not cut to proper length leaving an ugly/sloppy finished look. Too any finishing nails used, jig saw used to cut out furnace vents leading to rough edges, and so much more. After the fact we had our floors professionally inspected confirm wood was good and install was issue. Big regret needs to be redone in future.
Drywall was not sanded to a level nor were we given any option of drywall finishing. All square with right corners. Very low-quality finish. Many areas were not drywalled correctly and are patchy/spotty. The lack of care with the dry wall did lead to big issues with the cabinet installation and baseboards.
With both the floor and drywall poor quality installation, our cabinets are not level. They slant downwards east to west, have large gaps in between wall and upper cabinets. Fridge does not sit level. Runner boards on bottom not level with floor. Overall a low-quality rush job. Cabinets themselves look OK besides the lines. Boxes/shelves made of standard MDF or particle board. See no difference from big box store so not sure why so pricey, I know they are ‘custom’ but the gaps and crooked lines negate that. Big issue with the doors. We paid and signed for 5-piece wood. 4-piece wood frame with HDF panel was installed. Very disappointed and still trying to get fixed. Completely lied too and cheated! Pretty much ruins our cabinets. Especially now that the paint has minor chips on the wood, thus our boards will destress, but the panel always look new.
Every chance they tried to avoid completing the job and owing up to mistakes. Our house was vacant during the renovation. They use our utilities and never paid, use our bathrooms and never cleaned. Our furnace broke and they said it was our problem. The covered up our furnace humidistat wires and left use to deal with the issue. They burst a water pipe and soaked our electrical panel. Left us to deal with it. They never cleaned up after sanding the drywall, left us to deal with it. Installed a doorbell but never changed transformer so it does not work, said we had to. Never told us ceiling insulation as not standard thus I had to rush out, buy $500 worth, and install myself day before drywall. Forced us to pay extra for plumbing corrections under a dropdown ceiling (we made it clear from the start that the dropdown was to be removed, thus one would assume they would build that into the price. Honestly there were so many issues I cannot believe we paid them looking back on the entire processes. A HUGE mistake was trust them on removal of walls, they claimed some walls could not be removed, now I question that as they were just trying to do a quick job and make extra money, and we are left wonder if a few obstructing walls could have been torn down.
We did catch a huge issue with the countertops. Right before they were to be installed, I found out the island was coming in as two pieces. A quick call to a few stores revealed you could do our size in one piece. I did stand up and complain and after much back and forth they agreed to cancel the countertops BUT we then had to do it our selves. This took 4-weeks. What a total JOKE this company is. No transparency as they should have showed us how the slabs would be installed.
In the end there are so many things that were bad. With all the options you have please avoid this company. You can find me online and I can share many more details. My wife and I feel just gutted now (after having the processes being digested) that we were taken advantage of and never given he dream kitchen we wanted. They got lots of cash and we got stuck living in a low-quality renovation with much disappointment.
