Todd Haiman Landscape Design

I wanted to design my own garden, but I specifically wanted a rooftop landscape designer for my LI backyard because it is so small and narrow. I have some gardening experience, but nothing remotely on a professional scale and this project is going to be costly. I searched the web for a designer with real talent and it did not take me long to find Todd. I was delighted when he accepted my invitation. He was a pleasure to work with from the start. I was asked to provide a survey and I laid out my ideas on paper before we met. The day of our appointment, Todd came early. He wanted to walk the property alone. He was brimming with names of native plants that would work well on my property and I was writing as fast as I could trying to keep up. It was like learning another language. Todd suggested that I start a spreadsheet which I did, and it was so much easier to go back and narrow down the materials I needed for installation. He brought me to a whole other level. It was the best investment of time and money that I could have made and in the process, I made a friend.

Todd Haiman was a perfect match for the challenges presented by my yard in Sunnyside Gardens, an historic district on the National Register of Historic Places and an official New York City landmark neighborhood. The final design had to be attractive from multiple levels by me and my neighbors, while meeting historic guidelines. From the beginning, Mr Haiman listened carefully to my list of requirements—from usage of space to native plant preferences. His use of hardscape materials and planting areas reflected the design intent of the original planners of Sunnyside Gardens, and we were both committed to the idea that the final plan could be replicated by others in the community. An unexpected design element, precipitated by pandemic recommendations, was the establishment of four socially distanced seating areas that are practical yet beautiful. Mr Haiman, a consummate professional, personally managed this project from initial design through completion. He balanced this client’s needs and wants with his extensive knowledge and expertise, and he delivered an unforgettable design that met everyone’s expectations, including those of regulatory agencies. On this project, Mr Haiman’s coordination of five contractors—electric, masonry, landscaping, nursery, and exterior furnishings—was seamless, and each team’s professional skill and enthusiastic respect for the design ensured that project was completed on time and within budget. Since completion it has solicited rave reviews!

Todd and his team have become one of our go to references for any and all landscape design needs. We were introduced by one of our long time clients and collaborated on their Tribeca Loft project. We have continued the relationship whenever possible. Todd is extremely thoughtful and conscientious. His care to balance client's desires, budget and goals are paramount and it shows. We are HUGE fans of Todd- not only his design eye, his materials, his project management and his final result but he is a great guy to partner with on a landscape project- a total joy to work with. We have a second home in the Catskills and had just renovated our interior and were anxious to conquer the outdoor space. Through a recommendation we found our way to Todd’s firm THLD. We requested a design that evoked a sense of place, endemic to the Catskills. We entertain frequently, wanted a firepit, native landscape, privacy, seasonal interest, multiple areas to congregate, an inviting entrance to our property and functional paths. My husband and I engaged Todd Haiman Landscape Design to design and build our townhouse garden in midtown Manhattan. We had just finished our home/interior renovation and were in dire need of his expertise to complete the exterior space. We researched quite a few different designers, but loved Todd's aesthetic and his honest approach. "I have had the pleasure of working with Todd of THLD on three projects over the last two years. All three were roof garden/terrace designs, unique to the site and client needs. The first job, a downtown Manhattan terrace garden included use of porcelain paver tiles for the terrace on multiple grades and wall tile work. Todd Haiman designed and project managed three terraces for us (the largest of which is 360 sq ft). These spaces had a lot of potential, but were also challenging in terms of their unusual dimensions. Todd excelled at every stage of our project: During the design and planning phase Todd struck a delicate balance, marrying creative vision and expertise with a truly collaborative approach to design. The final plan took into account all of our goals for the spaces and turned their challenges into opportunities for added interest and utility. After we settled on a plan, Todd guided us through the overwhelming process of purchasing custom planters and hiring irrigation and carpentry teams, which required a tremendous amount of cost engineering. When spring came, Todd meticulously project managed multiple phases of the install, working closely with several teams to implement the design. He has clearly earned the respect of his contractors over the years, and I think his leadership throughout the implementation phase elevated the level of craftsmanship in the finished product. Even though our project was completed over a month ago, we have since seen Todd several times, including once when he stopped by to check on our plants and deliver a sunflower from his personal roof garden. We will be continuing to work with Todd and team for management of our gardens going forward.

Todd Haiman has been a pleasure to work with from start to finish. His design solutions addressed our needs and wants in ways we couldn't have imagined. He brought his own unique perspective to the project, but at the same time was very attentive to our own preferences. We contacted Todd in 2015 to create an outdoor haven working within the confines of an urban rooftop, dealing with weight load complications and wind and sun issues. He worked tirelessly with our designer and engineer to make the planters not just feasible, but beautiful. We are able to grill surrounded by trees, sea grasses, roses, hydrangeas and a vast variety of plants that work together harmoniously, and make us feel as though we are in the countryside. We asked Todd Haiman to "fill in" and reconsider the planting in an existing brownstone rear garden in Brooklyn. In addition to creating a new planting plan, Todd recommended a crew of four, who replaced soil and planted under his supervision. Todd was a pleasure to work with on every front. He was respectful to the existing design while providing new insights, attentive to our concerns, knowledgeable, professional (i.e. delivered what he promised, on time, with attention to details), and fun to chat with. We have been longitudinally installing a native garden across our property over a several year period. We had worked with a number of landscape architects over time. "We asked Todd to collaborate with us on creating an entrance garden for our condo building in Lower Manhattan. He worked with an exceptional contractor to custom build planters that were site specific, and the job was completed fluidly and quickly. As the setting was in a public space, he chose plants that have held up to the abuse. A beautiful combination of plants, they soften the hard architecture of the cast iron and brick facades. Our building now has a welcoming entrance, improving real estate value and putting a smile on our face every time we come home from a hard day at work and see the butterflies dancing among the flowers."

His work was thoughtful, creative and comprehensive in planning and building our garden. We greatly appreciated his use of sustainable and ecologically friendly methods in the construction phase of the job. We also appreciated his planting of the native plants (he educated us on them) that worked wonders in attracting butterflies and birds to our garden. It's pure entertainment to watch! We contracted with Todd early in 2014 to design our rear garden. We gave him a clean slate to work with - a 30x20 completely empty dirt lot. He spent a good deal of time with us talking about what we envisioned our dream garden to be. My wife and I agreed on most things but each of us had some individual items that were important to us. Todd was able to come up with several very attractive design options that would incorporate both of our 'wish lists' and the fact that we have children and a large dog. He is one of the most creative and resourceful contractors we've ever worked with. Once we decided on a design, we began to discuss materials. Again, Todd was helpful in giving us a range of materials we could use in construction, depending on our tastes and budget. He worked with us to find the best sources for material and labor and listened to our concerns throughout the process. He proved to be a very capable general contractor, helping us find and coordinate other service providers, and working as supervisor and overseer of all subcontractors. As with any renovation, obstacles did arise. Todd was an efficient problem solver, coming up with creative solutions to drainage issues, a structural problem with the back wall of our garden and several other minor issues. Additionally, Todd has a vast knowledge and understanding of all manner of flora, and more importantly, of native plant species. He can advise on which plants will thrive in shade, sun, low water or wet conditions. He can also help match blooming and leafing plants to your color palette tastes. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Todd and plan to use his services again soon to complete a front garden for our home.
