Bruce and Jeff did a phenomenal job and were a pleasure to work with throughout the project. My wife and I were looking to create a landscape master plan for our property which has some site challenges including a large side slope, drainage considerations, and wetlands. We worried that our project and budget constraints might be too small for The MacDowell Company to take on given the size and scope of some of the beautiful installations in the company's portfolio. Throughout the iterative design process, we never felt like less than their most important client. The final product exceeded our expectations and perfectly fit our needs. Not enough words to describe how professional the folks at The MacDowell Company are. We engaged TMC for a total landscape design and build and the project took almost 2 years from start to finish. The quality of the work product was top-notch and Bruce led his team with the utmost attention to detail and responsiveness. TMC does not shy away from challenges and tackled the installation and design of a custom pizza oven with parts directly shipped from Italy. We highly recommend TMC for the quality of their services and professionalism.

The MacDowell Company does the most beautiful landscape work -- period. I have admired their work for years (decades) and honestly thought they were too high-end for us. But a girl can dream, right? So I called, told them we were looking to put in a pool and do some landscaping around the pool to make it look like it at had always been there. From the first inquiry, they have made us feel like we are their biggest and most important customer. Their work is perfection. Their work crews couldn't be nicer, more hardworking or thoughtful (they were constantly worried about our pets roaming around the construction area and ensured they were always safe). Everyday they arrived promptly, with smiles on their faces and left the job site clean and safe at the end of each day. All the tools picked up, caution tape over ditches and they always took the time to show us where the dangers might be each day for the kids and pets. The communication from our lead designer and Project Manager was PERFECTION (and I am a communications professional so I don't say that lightly!). If plants were delayed, we knew it. It irrigation was holding us up, they would proactively let me know. If they weren't going to show up for a day because of delayed materials, they let us know in advanced. We have done many construction and landscaping projects and let me tell you NO ONE kept us informed on the status of things like this team. And when we made changes to our plans -- who doesn't? -- they were incredible. No one likes curve balls, but they handled them in stride, give you the cost estimate quickly and were able to stay on longer than expected to make our changes and get the job done. Finally, THEY FINISHED ON TIME AND ON BUDGET. Their attention to detail is BEYOND... They showed up unexpectedly (but always most welcome) late this Fall to put blankets around the pipes coming into the house on our irrigation system because temperatures were going to dip below freezing that night (we kept the irrigation on late to make sure the new plantings were happy). WOW. I was honestly sad when the project was completed and this crew stopped coming each day. They were a joy to have around and made our home more beautiful each and every day. They were earnest, honest and did what they told me they were going to do. They truly aim to please and SUCCEED in every way. Our project was completed in the Fall of 2020 and wouldn't you know it, as soon as the snow melted last week (Spring 2021), the team leaders showed up to check on the plantings, see how things wintered and ask if there was anything that need correcting/fixing!?!?! And of course they sent me an email before the came, so I wouldn't be surprised about a visit (although a surprise visit from MacDowell is ALWAYS welcome). Anyway, HUGE HUGE FAN -- they delivered exactly what I wanted in the best possible way -- through kind, earnest, thoughtful and honest work. The project is beyond my wildest dreams.

Bruce and his team at the MacDowell Company did an exceptional job. After construction of our new house, we hired them to complete the landscaping of the property, which needed extensive work due to the construction. We met with Bruce and Mike N. several times, explaining our needs, our vision for the property, and budget limitations. Bruce and his team presented several great ideas, as well as different plans (and pricing) for us to choose from. We settled on a plan that would allow for future expansion, while not disturbing any work initially done. The guys who implemented the plan were simply fabulous. The hardscaping was done by an experienced team, who constructed a beautiful front wall, rear patio, and some attractive tree wells. The other members of the team took great care with grading the property and installing the plantings. Also, the team coordinated the installation of a new irrigation system. One of the main highlights of the work was the choice of plantings, in consultation with us, which emphasized the use of native plantings and low maintenance grass (fescue). We have been very impressed and pleased with the final result! The MacDowell Company was an excellent choice for us and we give them our highest endorsement!

My husband and I were looking for a landscape design and construction company that was able to handle many different landscape needs. We wanted to expand our patio and add a stonewall with built-in lighting, we wanted to add a gas line for a gas grill beneath the patio, we wanted to fix drainage issues in our backyard, we needed to add irrigation, we wanted to add a vegetable garden with fence, we wanted to replace dead evergreen trees, and we wanted to add flowers/ shrubs/trees around our house to make the landscaping more attractive. In addition, we were looking for a company that was able to handle what we knew would be a challenging permitting process, since our house is located on a historic road. The MacDowell Company guided us through the permitting process and worked well with town officials to ensure we got the necessary permits. They also were meticulous when it came to detail. They paid special attention to the layout of the stone patio, they made sure trees were planted in the ground straight, they were constantly monitoring our new sod after installation, and they continuously updated us on their progress. Overall, The MacDowell company was a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend them for both landscape design and construction.

They went the extra mile, including the time when Bruce came to our home on a weekend evening after the project was completed because we had questions about how to use our new gas fire pit. We hired The MacDowell Company to build a backyard patio and outdoor kitchen area after looking at several other local design firms from Gloucester to Newport. We were concerned about not getting the attention of their more elaborate and expensive projects but Bruce and his team made us feel like we were their only client from day one. Although we had to remove some elements from our design to stay within our tight budget, the quality of workmanship and customer service we got in return are invaluable and worth the investment. My husband and I bought a small bungalow in Westwood that requires a great deal of work. We contacted Bruce to widen our driveway and to recreate our entire landscape design. I have to admit that I was intimidated when first reaching out to him based on the beautiful photos of his projects. Bruce replied promptly and thoroughly to my email inquiry for an estimate to plant several shrubs, bushes, and flowers around my property. He was very professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. His landscape designer was able to translate our nondescript request into a beautiful arrangement of plantings that perfectly complemented the natural surroundings. In fact, the total even came in below the original quote because they were able to repurpose some of the original plantings on the property and save me some money. My wife and I could not recommend Bruce MacDowell and the MacDowell company more highly. If we could give them an extra star in our rating, we would. They did landscaping and hardscapes in our backyard in Boston. Essentially they completely remade our small urban backyard, removing trees, adding a patio and walkway, several small retaining walls and extensive planting. They also redid our drainage system and installed an irrigation system. MacDowell exceeded our expectations my a mile and did a supremely outstanding job. First of all, Bruce MacDowell coordinates everything and was an excellent communicator throughout the course of the project (including the run-up, during, and after the project was finished and paid for). He has never failed to be compulsively attentive to every need and concern my wife and I had. He would regularly summarize meetings very clearly in emails. He met with us multiple times to revise plans until we got it perfect. His attention to detail is truly impressive and he misses nothing. He also has a reassuring and laid-back style that made it a pleasure to deal with him. Jeff Plant who is the company landscape architect is equally capable, straightforward, attentive, thoughtful and kind. You cannot get a better team than these two. In terms of the work itself, Bruce's uncles who do the majority of the landscaping and hardscape, are two of the most capable, experienced and hardworking people I have ever met. They were early to the job every morning and hard at work promptly at 7AM. They worked without letup and did a tremendous amount in a relatively short amount of time. The quality of their work is unimpeachable. We could not be more happy with the final result and continue to be surprised at how invested Bruce has been in the outcome even after the project is finished. He has been back to our property multiple times in the month since the project was finished to tweak the irrigation system, check on plants, fix minor things. Really unbelievable dedication and care. There are few contractors or businesses that care about their work as much as Bruce and his team. We would hire them again in a heartbeat and we freely give them our absolutely highest recommendation.

The MacDowell company recently finished an absolutely stunning stone back patio for us. The new space totally transforms our home and we enjoy it every day. We initially hired them for design services only and then decided to have them build the project as well. The project includes a large bluestone patio with New England fieldstone walls and piers, a fire pit, two sets of stairs, and extensive lighting, irrigation, and landscaping work. All of the work is absolutely top quality, as was the customer service throughout. I can't recommend them more highly. The project was also completed in a timely manner, and Bruce coordinated the subcontractors who did electrical and irrigation work. We got a few other bids to build the project. Theirs wasn't the cheapest bid - but we got what we paid for, and then some. The masons took their time and measured, cut, and re-measured each stone until it was perfect. When little things came up - like finding the right light fixtures to go on the large piers we designed, Bruce and his team met with us a number of times and brought in sample fixtures. When we weren't able to find the perfect fixture and decided to customize one from Arroyo Craftsman, he made mock-ups of various sizes and helped us create the perfect light fixture for this critical element of our project. They've also come out and helped us with our irrigation and with adjusting the grading of the lawn to a fence we just installed. They didn't charge us for these services, which were not entirely in the original scope of the project. Bruce has also gone out of his way to help me find contractors for other related things I needed. In summary, very highly recommended.

This spring I spoke with three landscaping cos with the objective of replacing my existing front walkway and steps. Clearly in speaking with Bruce, he knew the key issues and was very helpful in discussing the details of the project - always responding quickly to my many questions. Execution of the project was terrific (granite walk and steps) - on time, professional and helpful with ideas and concerns along the way. New front walk looks terrific and adds to the overall street presence of the house - well worth the investment! Overall very satisfied with the project and would be inclined to hire again for future landscaping.

We hired Bruce and his team to rework an existing patio on the back side of our house. They rescoped the space, brought a landscape architect to redesign it, and then did all the masonary work to create the new patio. We added an entirely new feature, a gas firepit, so that required a lot of coordination with plumbers and electricians. The team was very good as many of the things you want from a contractor - good project management, communication and updates, nice people, very knowledgable, punctual, and super detail oriented. I have a new appreciattion fo the technical and artistic skills of these crafts people. Turned out really nicely!

We worked with MacDowell Company to design and build a visually appealing entry way to our back deck and we were struggling to visualize the options. MacDowell did an excellent job of helping us visualize the possibilities, and after narrowing down the options, created a design to confirm that we were on the same page. One of the challenges of the project was dealing with elevation changes. They were meticulous in their planning and measuring prior to starting the project to ensure that the final product would come together as envisioned. It was a pleasure to work with MacDowell when it came time to do the build phase of the project. They showed up when they said they would and kept us informed of status on a consistent basis. Bruce Jr was readily available throughout the project to answer questions and coordinate various aspects of the project. The final product is awesome. Such a huge improvement. I was extremely impressed with this company. I hired them to design and build a patio, and to create a landscape design for the back yard. They were pleasant, professional, very responsive to questions and very thorough in their planning. They provided multiple designs to consider, provided samples of various materials and were very consultative on every aspect of the plan. They researched my property and identified some potential issues in advance so we could discuss and identify a course of action before construction. I was very impressed with their attention to detail from planning, to execution to clean up, My new patio was designed Looks amazing, and was completed on time, and on budget. We also started the landscape work - they did a very through job of cleaning the beds of old materials, planting new trees, spreading new loam - all with minimizing the impact to my lawn. Any question I had was promptly responded to. I would highly recommend them!

I hired MacDowell almost 12 years ago to completely reconfigure my front yard - which was a big hill, to add several levels of stone walls, to add a driveway, and to add a bluestone patio and stone wall in the backyard. We hired The MacDowell Company to design, construct & integrate the complete renovation of our backyard. This included deck & drainage modifications; new retaining wall, stone patio, steps & walkways; upgrades to all aspects of the in ground pool; fencing and landscaping. In addition, as we live adjacent to protected wetlands, they also oversaw the necessary environmental requirements with our town. MacDowell's attention to detail was exceptional and we feel that they handled the project as if it were their own home. They offered various solutions to the design and worked with us to provide alternatives as needed to help us remain within our budget. Once the plans were finalized, they were very rigorous in managing the cost & any changes to the project. They were extremely patient and responsive to our needs and questions as this was the first time we had completed a job like this.
