Outer space Landscape Architecture

I bought a stunning midcentury modern house in 2016 in the Kensington hills that could best be described as a rustic modern fixer-upper. The setting was tranquil and featured patios, decks and an entry courtyard, the outdoor space included a waterfall and koie fish pond. The long standing gardener assured me that nothing would grow in this setting, amidst tall Monterey Pines and juniper bushes. When I met Jude and Laura from Outer Space Landscape Architecture I knew that they saw the potential of my property, and worked closely with me to achieve a design plan that preserved the serenity and beauty but elevated the opportunities for enjoying the beauty and entertaining options. The whole design process was terrific, I loved looking at their drawings, materials, and their collaborative spirit. It was more than fun, it was exciting - we worked on budget, met different contractors, before choosing the company to implement the plan. Suddenly I had a lighting and hillside/patio drainage system where there was none before. I had ideas from a trip to Japan that they integrated. We took down trees that blocked the light or were ugly, planted more Japanese Maples. Flowers, vegetables, two strawberry patches and an herb garden are just outside my kitchen. As each season changes the colors and plants blooming, I am immersed in the ongoing visual and sensory pleasure that my indoor/outdoor home delivers. Outer Space Landscape Architecture extended the living space of my home, it is seemless and elevated it to the happiest and most peaceful place that I have ever lived. I highly recommend Jude and Laura, they are top notch.

I highly recommend Jude and Laura. I recently purchased a new house with "landscaping" the seller described as "low maintenance" (think neon green astroturf). After flirting with idea of using one of those online-only landscape design services, my fiancee convinced me to call Outer Space to see if the difference in price might be worth it. We are so glad we made that call! Jude and Laura are truly talented people. They transformed our front and back yard from a liability to one of the best and most beautiful improvements we've made to our home. They have a deep knowledge of what works and what doesn't work and the vision for transforming a space in a way that we couldn't have dreamed up on our own. They listened carefully to our concerns and design preferences and translated it into a modern, elegant and functional space. Beyond the impeccable design, Jude and Laura are fantastic at tackling challenges in a sophisticated and creative manner that only true professionals with several years of experience could.

We love Outer space Landscape Architecture! I found them on Houzz last year, and they absolutely delivered in every way I had hoped. They were professional, responsive, and created a design that has completely transformed our backyard. It was a challenging lot to work with on a steep slope, completely covered in overgrown bushes and weeds. I consider our soon-to-be finished project an artistic masterpiece, as the team was able to see past the mess and put together a plan that reflected our wish list, preferences for aesthetic, as well as some extras like a a gas fire pit and built-in lighting at Jude's suggestion which really brought the "wow" factor into the finished product (and which to my pleasant surprise did not cost as much as I would have thought!). She also recognized early on that we would benefit from a land survey and gave us the right referral to get the job done at a reasonable price - this ended up saving us a lot of money in the long run, so that we didn't waste money on a plan that would have been abandoned later on. Jude also provided a list of suggested contractors, and we've absolutely been thrilled with the work they have done. We wholeheartedly recommend Outer space!

Outer space transformed my house from nice to next level WOW! When I moved in the front of the house and entryway gardens were traditional with roses and wildflowers, a chaotic shabby chic look. After working with Jude, we simplified the pallette to greens and greys using succulents, grasses, and more modern masonry with clean lines and a new lighting plan. Every guest who enters our house remarks on the garden and the stunning, tall white sculptures she nestled artfully among the trees. My house feels put together, fresh, and with a little bit of glamourous drama that was missing when we first moved in. We are absolutely thrilled with the results. We also loved the firepit she recommended and the back of house planters. We just finished a design on elegant decking around our hot tub. We can't say enough great things about Outer space and will always use them for any landscaping projects.

Outer space was great to work with. They have an incredible design eye as well as are very efficient and wonderful to work with. Jude was fun to work with and always had great suggestions. We love our back and front yards and now enjoy time out there with our family. I strongly recommend them.

Laura White did a wonderful job translating our design goals into a really beautiful concept that we are implementing for our home. She was easy to deal with and had many keen insights that really made the spaces more accessible and eye-catching. We have used Laura and crew for a project in the past, so of course we would gladly use Outer Space again!

Working with Jude Hellewell of Outer Space was as easy as could be. We described our concepts and needs for our front/backyard renovations, and she came back with an initial design and several additional great ideas. She adjusted the design based on our comments, then we moved ahead to get bids from several contractors (she also aided in that process). We wanted a modern, low-water-use design that would stand out from the other houses on the block, and that’s what she delivered. Our yard isn’t large, and one of the benefits of Jude’s design was creating real separation between the deck/eating area, the grill area, and the fire pit. When we’re eating at the table we don’t really see the fire pit, but we can retire to it after dinner and it feels quite different and distinct. It sounds like a small thing, but it’s not easy to do that in a yard the size of ours. Her design did it! Jude’s experience and knowledge of landscape design was critically important to our renovation, and now that the work has been done for nearly 2 years, we couldn’t be happier. Jude is a real star, and we’d work with her again in a heartbeat. We loved working with her, and you will, too. One final note: our yard was nominated in 2017 for a design award by the City of Burlingame, whose intent was to honor elegantly designed drought-tolerant landscaping. Although our new yard didn’t win the award (competition was tough, and our yard hadn’t fully grown in), the nomination is a testament to the quality of Jude’s design and the integrity of her design vision.

Outer space did an amazing job designing the atrium and front and back yards of our Eichler. We gave them a long list of wants and wishes -- from vegetable beds to drought tolerant landscaping to hot tubs and outdoor kitchens -- and they did a fantastic job of translating that into a beautiful and coherent plan. They were great to work with during the design process -- excellent communication, responsive over email, and good attention to detail -- helped us find landscaping contractors and get bids. We look forward to many years enjoying our wonderful landscaping!

Would I recommend Outer space? Absolutely. We loved working with the folks at Outer space. Jude and Laura are professional, responsive, and wonderful people to work with, from the first contact through to end of the project (and more). Outer space is very efficient, and this kept the design and plans costs very reasonable. Our project was a complete redesign of the front and back. Their plans were contractor-ready, with sufficient detail, such that a qualified contractor was able to provide accurate costing. Both Jude and Laura provided many great ideas from the initial, pre-planning stages, through the final detailed plans, as well as my additions and change requests. The best way to describe the relationship was that of a team - each of us would provide ideas and feedback, and we refined the choices to come to a final set of plans. Our recommended contractor was also part of this collaborative team. We've entertained many times now in the backyard, and just love the results of the entire project. Thank you Outer space!

Laura and Jude did several projects at our home over the last few years and we could not be happier! They are a pleasure to work with and they have an amazing eye for design. Their knowledge of plants and current drought conditions allowed us to to have a beautiful, lush garden while keeping water savings and environmental impact in mind. They are always available and so easy to work with. We couldn't be happier with their work- it turned out amazing.

Working with Outerspace Landscaping was a stellar experience from beginning to end. They didn't just produce an innovative and stunning redesign of our admittedly problematic terraced backyard, but they also listened keenly to the specific needs and tastes of our family. Jude spent a great deal of time talking with us and getting a feel for who were were as people--and how we planned on using the space--before coming up with solutions we never would have come up with but loved. My only regret is that I don't have another project for them to tackle. The next house we buy...
