1 insignia Houzz
Welcome to Drake Woodworking's Houzz page, I am Drake Stuedemann, owner of Drake Woodworking a small business devoted entirely to the creation of beautiful, functional art. Studied in architecture and design, my design aesthetic highlights the natural beauty of wood through the use of natural slabs and simple, beautiful, structures. The story of each piece begins with a tree. Once the tree's health begins to deteriorate it is cut down and hauled to our mill for processing. Carefully, I slice the log into boards, exposing the inside much like opening a book. Acting as a memoir, the wood within the tree captures all that happens to it. With the cutting of each board, like the turning of a page, the tree's life story unfolds, whether it is a broken branch, a forest fire, or a bullet, it all shows up in the grain of the wood. When you order your piece of furniture, I comb through my stacks of lumber to find the perfect board. After finding the right board for your piece, I begin the process of crafting it by hand. The beauty and structure of fine furniture often lies in it's joinery. I pride myself in creating furnishings that are hand-crafted using traditional joinery methods such as the butterfly key, dovetailing, and bridle joints. Often times these time-proven techniques are simply the strongest, but in some instances, modern joinery methods are indispensable and are thus used accordingly. Once constructed, I begin a 10 step process of surface preparation. Although time consuming, this process of surface preparation and finishing produces a tactile experience that is second to none. With a feel similar to that of soft skin furniture begs to be touched. To create this soft, smooth, inviting surface, I use all-natural drying oils and waxes. Boiled Linseed Oil is my primary finish, but in cases where water protection is necessary Osmo Poly-X, a European hard-wax finish, is used instead. Although the pursuit of fine craft and furniture-making is my way-of-life, it is but one of my many passions. As an architectural designer, a published writer, outdoorsman, and art enthusiast, I live my life in appreciation of the finer things and I spend my time enjoying the beautiful things in the world. If you are reading this, I appreciate your time and your interest in Drake Woodworking. I hope that as you look through my work you find something that piques your interest. If so, don't hesitate to reach out. I look forward to hearing from you!
