We've all heard the saying, "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." When Tag Gilkeson enters a room people take notice because he carries himself with what I'd call "caring confidence." Think of any professional who may have a wall covered with diplomas, degrees, and certifications, but first and foremost is genuinely concerned about how you feel and how he or she can help. That's Tag. Over the last several years I've gotten to know Tag as his colleague serving together on the board of directors of the Building Association of Hawaii. Tag joined BIA-Hawaii to serve on its education committee and share his vast knowledge of aging in place, green building, and remodeling to name a few disciplines. Throughout the pandemic Tag joined committee meetings online and eventually came to Hawaii to teach classes. When the association had an opening for its state rep position with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Tag stepped up and offered to represent BIA-Hawaii...from Texas! He was so passionate about taking on this role that he lobbied hard to convince NAHB that BIA-Hawaii's sunrise actually begins in Dallas! As our state rep, Tag advocates diligently to ensure our association, due to its geographic isolation, receives the resources and attention it deserves from the national federation. Through Tag's efforts, builder's associations throughout the country are now able to keep more educational fee revenue in their programs that would've been paid out NAHB. This is a huge financial benefit, especially to small associations who need every dollar to keep their programs running. Tag also helped to arrange NAHB's leadership (current NAHB chairperson and immediate past chairman) to participate in BIA-Hawaii functions last year including our installation luncheon to install our 2024 board of directors. This really meant a lot to our members to meet people of such great caliber and influence, and to be able to share our Aloha Spirit with them. As a design-build general contractor with more than 30 years of experience building and remodeling hundreds of homes, I can confidently say that the architectural design work Tag & Associates does is highly professional and exquisitely designed. If I were to build a new home in Texas, Tag is the first person I'd call. He listens well and then tells you what he believes is best for you. That's how he has conducted himself in our association meeting all along: he calls it like he sees it because he wants what is best for the association. As a builder who is heavily involved in both my local and national home builder’s organizations, I often see Tag at these NAHB National events. He is a thought leader who really pushes the envelope and isn't afraid to speak up against issues. I like that he really lobbies aggressively for the building industry and that he is passionate for education. As the current Vice President of Metropolitan Builders & Contractors Association of New Jersey, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Tag directly as he is helping us start an education committee at our local level and we have already laid the foundation for the classes that we want to offer our membership. As a future Builder President of the local Home Builders Association, I value what education brings to our members. To have Tag teach some of the classes and have access to his decades of knowledge is really just a bonus to the membership. I respect people who give back to the industry and help out others when there is no direct payback expected. He does it for the betterment of the industry. Tag and Associates designed the house plan I had in my head for years. Tag and his team not only drew the plans but he made suggestions that streamlined the build saving us money and time. Our experience with Tag was amazing and we really enjoyed working with him to get out house built. Tag went above and beyond for us when our HOA had questions about our build. We have been in the house two months now. Build was finished Dec 2023 and we love this house. Any major project starts with planning your work and then working your plan. Building a house is certainly one of them, and the epicenter of planning starts with our architect. I was referred to Tag and Associates by a friend of mine who recently built her house. Upon my first meeting with Tag I immediately got the feeling of an architect that understood my needs, my goals and my constraints. I also felt from the get go he was a straight shooter. And that feeling proved true today after months of working with Tag and his firm to finalize my plans. Tag’s seasoned knowledge, professionalism, accessibility and no-nonsense approach is exactly what I needed in this crucial and important step to building my new home. Behind any good business is a great team. I had the pleasure and privilege of working with several great members of Tag’s team, starting with BreAnna. BreAnna’s warm, friendly and engaging personality took a lot of stress out of the process. Like Tag, BreAnna understood my goals, desires and constraints. Meeting with her on every Friday during the design process became something I looked for, similar to a kid waiting for Christmas morning to open the presents. For every Friday I got to see my plans get one step closer to reality. BreAnna was extremely flexible, responsive and was excellent in communication and follow up with me. Sara, my draftsperson, was the combination of an artist and magician. She came up with design aspects that blew my mind. I shared with both BreAnna and Sara that I was a single guy, absent of a woman in my life – and as such I needed good oversight to ensure I had a balanced perspective given my current situation as a bachelor. They were great in designing things that I would have overlooked otherwise. Sara’s ability to understand the big picture in my mind and then turn it into something more awe inspiring than anything I could have imagined was on full display. Approximately 2/3’s into the process it became evident that I needed to make the investment into Tag’s virtual reality solution. And even though it came with an extra cost it was well worth it given we were able to get ahead of changes in advance of the construction process. Furthermore, there is nothing more cool than virtually standing in your new home and getting the crystal clear picture of size, features, scale, etc. A big thanks to Jesse for all of his help in the set up and execution of the virtual reality. I am a custom home builder and by working with Tag & Associates I am able to elevate my offering packages to my clients. Tag & Associates provide very detailed architectural plans that can be easily followed by all trades in the field. Plumbing penetrations are accurately marked on the plans which minimizes risk. I have also sent my clients to the team at Tag & Associates to generate renderings for details when my clients are struggling to visualize the finished product. They also offer drone footage that I use to market my projects that are in progress. Their office set-up is impressive with a large screen in the conference room for reviewing plan details and multiple screens in the entrance that showcase previous and ongoing projects. I am A Texas REALTOR and my husband and I met with Tag and Associates to have our Dream retirement home plans drawn up. Tag was open and receptive to what were were looking for in our home and quickly ran with it. He even suggested several ideas that frankly we had not even thought of. He personalized the plans for us to age in place, making sure the home was able to fit our needs now and as well as in the future. Having plans drawn prior to the build saves on expensive changes during the build. I cannot imagine building a custom home without using Tag and his team. Their ability to create a virtual reality walk through of the house BEFORE it was built was an absolute game changer for us. It's amazing how realistic it is, and thanks to that preview we were able to make changes to our floor plan that I would never have seen without the VR. I just cannot visualize a flat floor plan the way people who do this every day can. Also, Tag's years of experience was SO helpful when I didn't even know what I was looking for in some cases - on the fly he could throw out multiple options/suggestions, and thanks to his vast building knowledge he also knew what would could work and what could NOT work. In doing research about home-builders, I asked Tag to walk me through his work process, and how exactly it was communicated to clients. Communication is big for me. Tag agreed to teach me what that looks like and made sure I got the full experience that a client might. Tag is a clear and articulate communicator. He’s respectful, never patronizing. He made me feel comfortable asking as many questions as I needed, to develop the right game plan. Every surface question I had was met by someone who clearly had deep industry knowledge, and had the experience to know what would and wouldn’t work, and why. Because he draws plans in 3D using AutoDesk Revit, I could actually see it, too! This was a major game-changer for me, and it definitely sets him apart from other firms. Drawing in 3D is clearly a huge benefit over standard blueprints. Tag was able to move very quickly, as any issues were spotted immediately in the 3D rendering of a design, rather than being an unpleasant surprise during a build. It also made changes simple enough to visualize right away, rather than “going back to the drawing board.” Because the measurements were so exact, and every material used can be seen, it was easy to know how much of each material would need to be ordered, saving time and money later and avoiding overbuying cement or running out of brick at a bad time (and isn’t it always a bad time to run out of brick?). Budgeting was much simpler this way and easier to trust than a set of blueprints and some good faith. I am very grateful to Tag for taking the time to explain his work and show me his process through a live GoToMeeting. The technology Tag has really enables people to work with the right designer for them, even if they aren’t local! I'm actually in New York, but it was like I was right there looking at an already-built house with him, and because he’s so good, it looked like a house I’d be proud to move right into. He has a real eye for details and special little areas, built for all the memories, drama, and curiosity that take a house and make it a home. I recommend working with Tag and all of his comprehensive technology if you get the chance. It will really make the difference, and you'll be able to see and feel that right away.
