Slate Creek Builders

Slate Creek did the full design-build to finish our walk-out basement. They started with an empty poured concrete space and turned it into a guest bedroom, bathroom, family room, workroom, and laundry room, essentially doubling the living space in our house. The project came with a lot of challenges that meant redoing almost all of the plumbing in the house, moving the main electrical panel, accounting for heat ducts, and more. They also had to manage homeowners (us!) with lots of specific requirements, questions, and ideas about what we wanted and how to do things. The results are amazing - the space is beautiful, meets all our needs, and has quickly become an active, frequently-used space. Cassidy, our designer, did a great job of making sure everything we wanted fit into a relatively small space, and Isaac, our site manager, was on hand throughout the whole project to answer questions, handle all the details, and generally keep things moving along smoothly. If I could give them six stars, I would - the result is everything we hoped it would be.

We hired Slate Creek Builders to design and build our 12'x14' screened porch and an attached open-air deck for grilling. We live on a steep hill and that made it rather challenging for Slate Creek but they handled it like pros and created a beautiful addition. Besides the challenge of building on a steep incline we also asked them to make the additions blend in with our house and landscape design which they did perfectly. We are very pleased with the outcome and would use them again.

Slate Creek Builders did a remarkable job on a recent renovation project at my home. Their approach to project design, project management and diligent communication gives confidence to the homeowner as you navigate all the twists and turns of renovation projects. We are exceedingly happy with our major upgrade from small mountain cabin to stunning custom-built lodge. We visualized our addition for over ten years and came to the design table with lots of ideas on what we wanted to include in our vacation home. The team at Slate Creek Builders understood our dream and made it into reality. They developed an extremely creative solution to our desire to keep the tiny original cabin relatively unchanged, yet still a unified part of the much larger structure. A connecting breezeway, jumbo wrap-around covered porches and an ingenious catwalk between the new and old spaces create a cohesive home with lots of comfortable indoor/outdoor living areas and excellent flow. The Slate Creek team was as committed as we were to getting the details right – and we were all about the details: unique vertical rebar pickets for the porch railings, custom bookcases and hand rails in the stairwell, varying stain colors for the interior wood (floors, doors, trim) and pocket doors everywhere! Dave was always available to hash out new ideas or find alternatives when we ran into the inevitable snags going from paper drawings to real-life building. Whenever we had a team meeting with Slate Creek, we always came out feeling that they were fully invested in making our new home magnificent. And it is! We hired Slate Creek after reviewing three companies for our kitchen and dining room project. What impressed us was their attention to the details we presented when laying out the project. We have owned the property for more than a decade and had developed a clear concept of what we did and did not want and they incorporated all of those ideas and then helped refine the project for better overall use. They present the design layout using a 3D Architectural program that allows you to view the new layout from multiple angles in order to refine details. Slate Creek uses an online project management tool called Co-Construct to lay out the project timeline, track the contract execution and any change orders, confirm material selections and most importantly communicate. Because of this, I felt we had the best communication with a contractor we have had on any remodel project. Their system pushes the messages through email to their designer, owner, and project manager keeping everyone in the loop. On the job execution, they kept us informed of their start date, clearly let us know what dates we needed to be out of the house for floor finishing, and let us know of any timeline changes promptly. We felt that they delivered all of the what we discussed in the project design and also dealt with any underlying issues that they found after demolition. There were a couple tricky structural issues uncovered that the contract company owner had to look over to correct. One of the additional benefits that Slate Creek brings is that the owner is a Civil Engineer. The project took about 4.5 months starting in October 2017 to relocate the kitchen, build a new dining room bump out, relocate the main stairs, and open up the first floor plan of the house. We've now been living in the finished structure for four months and are thrilled with the final product. I would absolutely recommend Slate Creek to anyone in the New River Valley looking to remodel their home.

Hi Sean, I am sorry for the delay in thanking you and your team for the beautiful addition to our home. Bob and I could not be happier with our new screened in porch. Bob and I have always thought that the house felt unfinished when it came to the porch. We imagined an area that met all of our needs and provided a restful, enjoyable place for our family to spend time while contributing to the aesthetics of the home. Right from the start, you and Cassidy were able to see our vision and make it better. The addition makes the house look complete and has been a wonderful investment for us. It is truly impressive the quality of work and attention to details that your team of builders possess. They were personable, communicative, focused and detailed. They had great customer service skills and were super to work with. We will miss having them around! Jason was truly amazing. He had great workmanship and we knew it would get done right. Incredible ability to make our ideas a reality. They took the time to learn our style and needs, and were able to make great recommendations and provide guidance that improved the project in style and practicality. They were straightforward with production issues, and offered alternatives and solutions throughout the process. The team at Slate Creek was great to work with. They all have a fantastic sense of humor and a genuine love for their work, both of which really helped lower the stress level of the project. Our project manager, Dave, was a particular standout. He always clearly communicated what work was scheduled and let us know promptly about any glitches and delays. We had new counter tops and back splash installed by SCB. I met with Cassidy Jones to go over preliminary ideas, then with she and Sean to go over the process. It was all smooth sailing. Cassidy was very helpful in helping me select the back splash tiling to compliment the counter tops I knew I wanted (recycled glass resin). She tracked suppliers down for us. I highly recommend SCB. Dave and Prescott were so friendly and easy to work with during the demo and installation process! Even though our lab barked at them every time they came into the house!!

Slate Creek Builders completely exceeded our expectations in our Master Suite renovation. We are not only thrilled with the end result, but they made the entire creative process enjoyable. I appreciated how organized their team was, how well they communicated with each other and with me and how clean the job site was. They are all so creative and were just as excited as I was about it all coming together. Renovating is such a personal and emotional experience as a homeowner and Sean, Cassidy, Dave and Prescott get that. They made us feel like we were their only client and their top priority.
