The Renovators of Canada (T-ROC)

I had 3 bathrooms renovated at my house, Chris Wang and Jonny are very professionals and very hard working people, job was done on time (2 weeks). Thank you guys for the job well done.

The work was done in a timely manner. Communication with all members of the team was excellent. The work was done professionally.

We were pleased with the work overall, but we did have to call them back to fix a couple of issues, which they did well. Also, when the sink was removed, damage was created; however, it was well repaired.

This company has great people and provides great work. The guys on-site were absolutely a pleasure and I'd work with them directly any day. This review however is mostly geared towards making other consumers aware of their management and pricing practice. Four weeks ago I hired two separate trades to take on the work of: a) demolition of dry wall for shower and a second 2 ft. long wall, b) lay down lining and drain for a shower and c) build a 6 ft. shower barrier. I'm basically preparing for a walk-in shower, replacing a bathtub. My previous estimates were between $1200-1500 including time and material (and a 1 day turn around time). Unfortunately both trades ended up having to cancel the project at the last minute, massively delaying my work. Not uncommon in the contracting industry. In desperation, T-ROC was recommended by a good friend of mine. Nasser and his guy came out to quote the work the night before. I made it very clear that I was in a bind and I needed the work done extremely fast and diligently (next morning by 11am latest for my next trade to do work). I expected an extra cost that would reflect the timing I was expecting. To my surprise, I was provided with a total cost of $2200+HST. Knowing the half day effort and material would be nowhere near this amount, I still accepted the amount to get the work done in time. Right off the bat, their team was late and no supervisor was on-site to oversee the work. Although an apology was made by the labourer, Nassar was either oblivious or unapologetic to it. Worst however is that the team wasn't fully aware of the effort that was needed on the job site -- they hadn't been properly briefed or there was some severe miscommunication. Half way through the work (I stuck around during the effort ALL day) I was then told of overages for $700 due to having to fix some studs behind dry wall - about 3-4 of them. According to my calculations that accounted for nearly $120 worth of material and an extra 60-80 minutes of effort. The price gouging clearly didn't stop and I felt I was being too taken advantage of. I approached Nassar and made him aware of my displeasure, to which he attempted defending with poor excuses of having to pick up material. I was given the option of picking up the material myself and I wouldn't be charged the extra $700. It however took my becoming intensely agitated for Nasser to understand the mistake he made in trying to extract even more profit from me. The more ridiculous part is that T-ROCs sales team acts so very friendly and professional. They do a great job of making you feel like you're getting white glove service and being taken care of -- BEWARE! In the end, I guarantee you (and from what I've read on other reviews) they have a practice of maximizing their return at every moment possible. I paid my deposit the night before and I paid 2 hours after the work was confirmed done. I'm a person of my word and I did everything in my own to keep things on track. In the end though I couldn't believe the amounts being thrown at me when I could easily discern the value of the work. Aside from what I thought T-ROC was trying to make on their ridiculous margins, the quality of work WAS at the level I needed it to be at. In the end the labourers ended up being the saving grace of the project and avoiding a complete and utter travesty of a situation. This is all unfortunate because the trade labourers are hard working and great fellows. Their bosses however prove to be unethical to the point that their tactics felt predatory. I hope everyone considering hiring them thinks twice or definitely make sure you get at least 3 other estimates to gauge how far off T-ROCs pricing actually is. Hope this team turns their methods around. Good business is about providing a quality service and being recognised for it. These guys have their priorities in the wrong place. Very unfortunate. Best of luck though. Also when I mentioned that I'd be posting a negative review, I was laughed at and told sarcastically they were so scared of what I had to write.

After a year of planning our fairly significant renovation, we engaged with a contractor to begin work in Sept 2017. After a short time, we expressed concern with the progress made as well as, the workmanship and quality with parts of the renovation. After enlisting the help of Perry (President, TROC) and Todd (Project Manager, TROC, York North branch) with wanting to make our renovation “right”, we engaged with this team to continue completing our renovation. From the get go, they were focused on us, the customer and our expectations, and immediately put our minds to ease. They executed on the plan, maintained regular communications, and said and completed what they claimed they would. A special mention needs to also go to John, who corrected many mistakes that were made with the previous contractor and his workmanship and quality is bar none. We were also very pleased with Dan and the other trades that were brought in to complete our renovation. We are tremendously grateful to Perry, Todd, and team for resurrecting our renovation and for helping us realize our vision. We couldn’t be happier and would not hesitate to use this team (TROC, York North branch) again or to recommend to family and friends.

The only reason this review is not 5 stars, is because it didn't start off right. Everywhere you go, there is a bad seed and unfortunately our first site super was a nightmare. But the sign of a good company is not necessarily all the good they can do, but how they handle the bad. Perry took responsibility for his employee and we were able to work things out. We were then assigned Dennis, who we now consider a friend. Thanks to Dennis and TROC we are now living in our dream home. I wish I could post more than 4 pictures! Dennis made everything wrong into a right. Anyone who hires Dennis/TROC should feel secure that they will be taken care of.

We are only part way through our renovation so far, but wanted to write a review of T-ROC at this phase of the project in recognition of how pleased we've been with their services up to this point. Our renovation turned from something that seemed fairly simple and straightforward to a situation that required significant structural work that was not caught during our home inspection and was totally unexpected. Rob and Jesse have worked tirelessly (and I'm not exaggerating when I say tirelessly) to keep our project moving forward despite the hurdles we've encountered. They have gone above and beyond to ensure that we are getting the best value for our money for our project that has more than doubled in budget. At this stage in the project there are a few things that we really appreciate about T-ROC and their process. The project is left very organized and tidy at each stage of the project. Rob and Jesse have been 100% available any time of day or night to respond to any questions or issues that have cropped up. We have never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a response to a text message or phone call. They are always willing to meet us on-site to discuss ideas and logistics. Additionally, we really like the transparent T-ROC process of breaking down the project into smaller pieces (i.e. electrical, plumbing, demolition, drywalling, etc.) and obtaining quotes from various sub-contractors for each piece of the project so we can ensure we are getting the best value and quality for each trade that they are bringing in. We can't wait to see how our project turns out and look forward to finishing this review in a few months!

I selected this company because they appeared to have a large staff and promised online updates of the schedule, a budget which would be altered in writing if costs changed and a site supervisor. I thought I would have a consistent staff and the price would be as detailed. NONE of this was provided and I feel responsible to warn anyone who saw this company's sign on my lawn. the site supervisor was rarely on site and relied on me to meet with trades that he subcontracted to. The TROC hourly workers took advantage of the lack of supervision and had extended lunches (I witnessed 2 hour lunches, hour long "15 min" breaks, etc). Once I came home to find them asleep on the back porch. It got to the point that the absent site supervisor put a sign in/out sheet in the house to monitor hours. When the carpenters refused to sign in, the site supervisor asked ME to monitor when the workers came via a text to him in the morning at at night. THen, when I was invoiced their hours, we reviewed the texts I had sent to the site supervisor and corrected for the hours that were actually worked. I had to clean up at the end of the day when the workers left; often finding open cans of paint, huge hills of sawdust, materials scattered on the driveway. When the project was "done" I found drywall sanding sponges shoved down the heating ducts because the workers were too lazy to walk to a garbage can. I provided direction to the carpenters as to what to do because no one else was here to tell them. Some subtrades (eg. the eaves troughs) were found at the last minute on kijiji and selected by the "site supervisor" (who never met them) because they were the cheapest. I take issue with paying TROC 21% (the industry norm is 20%) management fee when I was the one meeting the subtrades and telling them what to do and on site when they were working. The work itself was subpar, in part because of the turnover and in part because I think their workers knew they were unmonitored and could get away with murder. 4 different carpenters worked on one railing. Almost everything that i was able to see had to be redone which is why my 2 month reno has been ongoing for a year. For example; the stair railing split and was unstable; the door frames were crooked, their subcontractor electrician decided he didnt want to install 4 light fixtures for no particular reason other than that he was paid for the job in full prior to installing them. The worst part was that the invoices seemed extremely high. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and let it ride for a couple of months. When it continued and I asked for back up invoices and staff changed, I was finally provided (thank god) with the receipts and hours behind the invoices. here is what I found: - I was often billed for some things twice - I was billed for items that weren't for my job - I was repeatedly billed $65 for trades that were negotiated in our contract at lower rates ($45). - every invoice had errors in the tens of thousands of dollars. TROC would reverse the errors and their accountant departed shortly after this mess, but again I take issue with having to audit every invoice and find the errors on a monthly basis when they KNEW their accountant misbilled repeatedly in the past. a lot of damage was done to our house/landscaping because of the lack of care by the people working here and lack of supervision. (eg. setting up the carpentry bench on our newly hardwood covered floor, dumping dirt on our lawn and leaving it there for a month, paint dripped everywhere, all our landscaping lights broken by deliveries of wood). I was surprised when a 17 yr old student showed up one day and I was charged $45 an hour for his work. they had a "free" designer available but she was unable to tell me what her discounts were. TROC reps told me I could probably do better without her and save the troc 21% mark up, which I did. I will give Perry credit for making some correction to invoicing and changing the accountant, but I have still yet to see any sense of accountability (parden the pun). the reno that was to be 2 months has gone over budget and required my daily supervision and is now on its second year. Every error that I point out to TROC was met with the supervisor's critique that the guy who did it was an idiot rather than an apology. In fact, I was asked to thank the accountant for all the time she spent making corrections to my invoice. I held off on posting a review because I feared the impact such a review would have on my (written) warranty and the fact that I am still fighting with them to finish the items required to satisfy the occupancy sign off by the town. TROC was good years ago when it was small and had a dedicated staff. It is not the same company today because of turnover, culture, lack of supervision, and unfortunately Perry is a golfer and doesn't have a master builder on staff to ensure quality. If you read this and still want to hire this company please consider asking for: 1) Fixed cost; there isn't the attention to detail or costs by troc to anything other than fixed cost 2) a supervisor on site working daily 2) list who will be working on site and that there not be any turnover. 3) reduction in price if they go past their estimated delivery date without written pre-approval good luck to all.

Professional to deal with and made things that went wrong, right. E.g. cabinet handles were stolen during the renovation. They replaced the handles without any cost to us. Most of the subcontractors they used were good quality. Their work is supposed to be guaranteed for 10 years - however, we have not yet tested this out and it remained to be proven.

We have had TROC do a few small projects in the past. They are professional and courteous. Our latest was creating a mudroom and revamping our laundry space. The team worked with us to design and build a great space for our family. The project started and finished on time and on budget. Great work.

We have used the Renovators for 3 separate renovation jobs in our 43 year old home. We did massive renovations and updates to our home and we were very happy with the quality of work, the communication and the timing of getting the job done. Anything that shifted and changed or we were not completely satisfied with, they came back to fix up at no added cost. We still have more to do on our home and we will use the Renovators again :)

Clint was extremely meticulous with the tiling of our porch and foyer. He was also very pleasant to have working in our home. He cleaned up well and did a great job!
