Professional, personable, prompt, detail-oriented, and always striving for quality--these words describe the team at Bill Butler Builders. After living in our house for 27+ years, my husband and I decided it was long past time to update the kitchen. Our house was built in 1929/30, with a small kitchen typical of that era (ca. 11’ x 12’), which was last updated in the 1970s. Due to various constraints, expanding the size of the kitchen was not an option. In addition to the small size, the contractor also had to take account of three doorways into and out of the kitchen, an entry-area cabinet, heating and plumbing pipes which ran along the outside wall to the second floor, and a cast iron radiator under the sink, none of which could be moved without great expense. The renovation was to involve gutting the space down to the studs; removing hidden electrical wires from previous remodels; installing new electricity and lighting throughout the space, insulation, underfloor and top floor, drywall, cabinets, countertops, sink, faucets, and a doorbell; and retrofit the entryway cabinet. The plumbing and radiator were to remain where they were. The project also was to include painting the new drywall and the side entryway which opens into the kitchen.
I researched several contractors and kitchen design professionals; we took bids from five. The price quote from Bill Butler Builders (BBB) was in the middle of the price range. What drew us to sign with BBB was the (1) responsiveness and friendliness of all those who were part of the BBB team (office staff, cabinet designer, lead carpenter, tile installer, plumber, and others); (2) quality of the products they recommended; and (3) very detailed contract. At the first meeting at our house, Bill brought Sandy (an office manager), along with other members of the team so that they could all hear first-hand our desires and needs, and to assess the unique factors of this particular kitchen renovation before submitting a bid.
The sense of teamwork carried on throughout the project. The members of the team were professional craftspeople who worked diligently to make sure everything was done to high standards and was completed on time—actually, it was completed before the projected end date. Tom, the lead carpenter and on-site manager, a genius at anything involving carpentry and fix-it projects, and Sandy were always responsive to my questions. In discussing the bid, Bill cautioned us that there could be unanticipated problems in those old walls, such as mold and asbestos, which luckily were not found. One problem that was never anticipated though, was the possibility of the outside wall having no support joist. Tom asked to talk with me and my husband about that problem they discovered during the deconstruction process. He outlined the two options and the costs of fixing that problem. This extra cost brought a change order from BBB for us to sign indicating our agreement to the additional cost. Tom also did a few fix-it jobs, unrelated to the kitchen renovation, which also required change orders. These change orders were done so that there would be no surprise charges at the end of the project. Tom handled the on-site work efficiently and professionally.
Bill worked with various employees and subcontractors to do the work. I spent much time in-person and through many emails conferring with Al Curran at Curran Cabinetry & Design who was in charge of the cabinets and countertops. We are highly satisfied with the work that he did. The rest of the team (plumber, electricians, painter, tile installer), along with those already mentioned, were friendly, reliable, and responsive to my questions. The team did quality work. One thing that really impressed me was the dust control and the clean-up that they did at the end of each work day.
During the course of the two-month renovation Bill, who was the behind-the-scenes manager, and the office staff, primarily Sandy, did the coordinating, handling all of the minutia of getting the job done on time and to the highest of standards. The team at Bill Butler Builders was always respectful and thorough. Kudos to a job well-done. Highly recommend.
