ZEST architecture was founded in 2008 by the Dutch architect Co Govers (Masters in Architecture from TU Delft), after working with architects such as Max van Aerschot in the Netherlands and Josep Lluis Mateo in Spain. From the beginning, ZEST has focused on combining sustainability with natural elegance, which has always been an important aspect of Co's work.
At ZEST we work according to the principles of "Active Design" (designing the building in such a way as to minimize the needs for heating/cooling/artificial lighting) and "Integral Design" (incorporating decisions about energy efficiency and climatization from the beginning).
Our designs are characterized by the use of natural materials, which we apply in a minimalist and often innovative way, combining responsible choices with elegance. We believe materials that age beautifully lead to inherent durability, so we pay special attention to the "wabi sabi" of materials, a Japanese expression that refers to the beauty a natural material acquires over time. Our attention to detail in the design and the execution of our projects is one of the keys of our success with our clients.
As well as working for private and corporate clients on their homes and offices, we have also had some success with international competitions. Our mosque, the Ray of Light in Dubai, won a prize in 2010 and has been published in magazines and websites worldwide. Noted for its beauty and for the fact that it's the first mosque design that provides equal access to both men and women, it has been exhibited in various museums in Germany in 2012 and 2013 as part of the exhibition "Kubus oder Kuppel".
ZEST Architecture took part in the Biennale of Venice, which opened on June 2014. Zest presented an installation in Palazzo Mora, in the exhibition “Time Space Existence”, organized by the Global Art Affairs Foundation.

Ons appartement werd prachtig nadat Zest Architecture, Co en haar team, aangesteld hadden om het te renoveren. De samenwerking was fijn en we wisten al snel dat ons project in goede handen was zowel op gebied van creativiteit als opvolging.
Een echte aanrader !

We werkten met Zest Architecture voor de renovatie van een appartementje à de Spaanse Costa Brava. Plannen werden minutieus uitgetekend en uitgevoerd, rekening houdend met onze wensen. Ook in materiaalkeuzes werden we van A tot Z begeleid met een zeer mooi resultaat. Communicatie verliep heel vlot mede dankzij de meertaligheid van het Zest-team!

Reforma integral de dos pisos independientes que se transformaron en un duplex. Zest architecture son un equipo muy respetuoso que ha escuchado y entendido muy bien nuestros gustos y necesidades. Ha dado muchas ideas sobre espacios y materiales que han sido muy útiles. Combinando la practicidad y la belleza de materiales nobles, además de una alta exigencia en acabados, una buena coordinación de profesionales, una supervisión continuada de la obra y un buen cumplimiento de plazos previstos. Todo ello ha contribuido a que nos sintamos muy satisfechos y a gusto en nuestra casa.

Zest has made a proposal for renovating my garden and swimming pool. The design was excellent, with a good eye for what we as family wanted. The cooperation with the contractor was perfect, all in time and budget. Extra work was always discussed and proposed before hand.
Very positive thing is the knowledge Zest has about indigenous plants. So we planted lots of Mediterranean plants and trees, and everything worked out fine.
The whole project lasted six months and some extra work was done in later fase. I live abroad, so the coordination was in the hands of Zest but very good monitored. No worries at all.

We engaged Zest Architecture in connection with the full refurbishment of our pied-a-terre located in central Barcelona in a late 19th century building and were delighted to cooperate with Co Govers and Maria Matamala in all phases of the project, from planning to the final execution and delivery of the project. Being based in Scandinavia much of the communication was done long distance with English as the working language aside from some planned visits in situ in Barcelona. Being abroad posed no problem. The professionalism and level of (friendly) service of Zest Architecture was and is exceptional.
On our behalf Zest Architecture dealt with the various contractors involved in the project which involved many bespoke and complicated solutions. As in all construction projects unforseen events come up: technical issues but also other things such as "difficult neighbours" but Zest was there for us and helped us resolve the issues as they arose. There was no detail too small that they did not willingly and promptly address (and we are fussy clients) and both Co and Maria went out of their way to help us find the exact materials and products and helped us secure good discounts which they passed on to us.
It has all resulted in a very comfortable and aesthetically appealing home, with many practical solutions yet maintaining the "modern rustic" feeling that we aimed for. The bathrooms, considering the limited space available, turned out exceptionally well. Co and Maria have gladly continued to help us with the minor additions and amendments that always come up post project which we greatly appreciate. We have warmly recommended Zest Architecture to our friends and would not hesitate to do so to others.
