Established in 1986, Walker Concepts Architects is a Charleston, South Carolina based architectural firm that has been honored with numerous national and regional design awards, and with critical appraisal of its work. The design philosophy of Walker Concepts Architecture is based upon appropriateness of design to context, directness and economy of means and careful tailoring of the architectural expression to the needs of the client, the program and the budget. This is the second house my husband and I have built. After the first, NEVER AGAIN! My first requirement when we started thinking of building, I would hire an architect who shared my philosophy of creating a home, i.e. "The Not So Big House" by Sarah Susanka. Jimmy Walker was listed and I contacted him. He was exactly what I was looking for. Jimmy and his team met every criteria, obstacle and need that arose. He did it professionally, timely, on budget, with style and elegance. Actual build time for the house was about a year but Jimmy invested so much more than that. Jimmy worked with us from start to end. I'm almost embarrassed to think how much time and effort was involved. He laid out the process, timelines and budget clearly, concisely and calmly. He met every question and expectation excellently. I'm not shy about what I want, when or how I want it. I could have been the client from hell, but Jimmy is so good at what he does there was never a situation that was not handled professionally and smoothly. He understood what I wanted so well, I loved all of his suggestions and recommendations, even the ones he suggested we didn't do!

Jimmy Walker built my dream condo in the heart of the French quarter. Working with Jimmy was a pleasure and despite many obstacles put in front of him by construction changes, he never was side tracked. He would work tirelessly and would design and redesign until the adjustment fit our vision perfectly. Jimmy is and will always be our architect. His level of understanding the beauty of Charleston has given him a unique ability to design for new while blending in with the old. I remember him standing outside our new condo and looking down the street and he asked me, " what do you see" not sure what he meant. " I said our condo" and he said look again and I did and still saw our condo. I asked what was his point and he said it flows right in with the buildings around it as if it was here all the time and it did. I never really appreciated that comment until a new office building went up on Calhoun down from the aquarium. I remember calling him and saying I finally get it, because the office building stood out like a sore thumb- it did not fit. If you are looking for someone who can build your vision, while respecting the beauty of the surroundings, there is no one better!

We retained Schmitt Walker for full architectural services for a single family residence, from design development to oversight until completion. We wanted our dream home and we got it! It reflects the elements and style that WE wanted, rather than what an architect wanted to produce. Jimmy Walker was professional, cooperative and patient, and worked through issues as they came up. His interaction with our designer and contractor helped to being his drawings and plans to reality.

SWA designed a pool house/ cottage for us in 2010. It was the first structure of it's kind under a new ordinance in Mount pleasant. We trusted Jimmy Walker when he suggested we wait on the change in ordinance and it was well worth the wait. We were able to get the structure we wanted. The SWA team was professional and helpful through out the design and the building process. We love our additional living space and use it year round.

Comentado: House detailsAgain, siding is James Hardie fiber cement siding. Windows were JeldWen Windows and doors, I believe, and shutters custom made wood. It has been about 10 years ago, but best I can recall.

Comentado: Floors and drainagedrainage is a continuous French drain each side of main passageway. The step, from what I recall, is to contain the loose materials inside each stall on the floor and to keep from entering the center...
