Peter Vernon Architects are a small practice offering personalised and full architectural services in Ballarat and Melbourne. The practise profile has concentrated in more recent years on residential, adaptive reuse, industrial, university fitout and healthcare projects. Peter Vernon graduated with an architecture degree from the University of Melbourne in 1985. He also has a Bachelor of Arts from Deakin University majoring in art history subjects and in 2010 he graduated with a Master of Architecture from the University of Melbourne. His research thesis American Know-How and the Myer Emporium is an architectural history of Australia’s largest department store. Part of this thesis has been adapted to a paper entitled Shopping Towns Australia in the June 2012 issue of Fabrications, the peer reviewed journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Australia and New Zealand. He has been involved in institute affairs, having served on chapter committees and a national conference committee. He is an examiner for the Architectural Practice Exam (APE) Part 3: Oral Examination, Architects Accreditation Council of Australia. In 2012, he was technical advisor for an episode of series one of the ABC-TV series Who’s Been Sleeping in my House?

When we first sat down with Peter our brief was broad; we wanted to re-organise and modernise spaces in our 1930s home. We immediately felt comfortable with Peter who listened to us and took the time to establish what we liked and disliked about our existing home and what we were looking for. In a renovation. Over the course of a few meetings he quickly began to shape what our new spaces would look like. Peter has great vision regarding coordination of colour and finishes and so became a trusted consultant on interior design choices also. We love our new house, no more dead spaces and in their place beautiful rooms with architectural flair. Visitors never fail to be impressed. We highly recommend Peter.

Peter is a fabulous listener. This meant he spent a lot of time at the beginning listening to us talk about not just what we wanted the house to look like, but how we wanted to live in it. The result was a house that felt like home the moment we walked in. We love the look of it and it suits the way we live. Our site was very small (only 137 sq m) and we had a modest budget. Peter worked wonders with the space, and the house punches above its weight in terms of what you would expect on such a small site and what it cost to build. One of our friends nicknamed it the Tardis because it looked very modest from the outside but then kept opening up to reveal more and more space and light. Peter's experience and his ability to work with, and manage, the people involved in the build meant it was a relatively stress free experience for us. We loved working with Peter and we love the home he designed for our family. Living in it gives us pleasure every day.

Ok, a confession is needed. Kathryn is my wife and the 'we' she talks about is her and our daughter. Of course she is biased, but I think she also happens to be right! See for yourself: it is called the Kensington house in my Houzz profile.

We have worked with Peter Vernon Architects on a large scale project, a two-storey 1910 house on a double block with a heritage overlay. The house, when purchased by us was largely 'untouched' apart from an added living room, dark and ripe for a full restoration. I was impressed by Peter from the moment he first walked the property with us and realised he was absolutely in tune with our desire to restore our beautiful old house sympathetically. His spontaneous ideas reflected clearly his passion for heritage work. Some major structural changes were required to open up the informal living area to allow more natural light into the house and to also incorporate an ensuite to the master bedroom and the addition of a more generous sized guest bathroom. Most rooms would be 'gutted' and restored using natural materials such as limestone, timber, and woven fabrics. Plans were drawn up by Peter with full collaboration with us throughout the whole design process. We found his communication skills to be exemplary as is his sensitivity to detail. Peter's ability to liaise closely with us and the builder saw the project run smoothly, finish on time and within our budget.

Peter Vernon was brilliant. His imaginative design skills coupled with his pragmatic knowledge of the building process, meant we achieved budget without compromising aesthetics. Our home extension is beautiful and works practically also. It is in scale with the existing building and matches and elevates the existing style. We could never have achieved such a pleasing result without Peter's knowledge and guiding hand, We love living here!

Peter is an excellent architect. We have used him for two projects: a renovation of a large terrace in Surry Hills, Sydney (2002) and a renovation of a family house in Camberwell , Melbourne (2006). Peter listened carefully to our needs and created beautiful homes for us. He also managed both projects. He is experienced, creative and practical (brilliant bathrooms and kitchens). It is unusual to find a someone who has clever, ‘big picture ideas’ (eg. orientation of rooms, how to maximise light) while also being good with details (eg. a carefully positioned nightlight in our hallway, dimmers in the right parts of the house). He was respectful of our budgets. We highly recommend him.
