Office of Architecture, based in Wimberley, Texas, is an award-winning, design-oriented firm with over thirty years of experience. Providing creative solutions to both residential and commercial clients, the designs of the Office of Architecture are grounded in proven design principles resulting in architecture that is clear and precise, conceptually simple but exciting, and appropriately contextual without being derivative. Guided by the architectural principles of form, light, proportion, and sustainability, ooA is committed to being of service to their clients, helping them realize the maximum potential of their project while creating solutions that are as unique and individualized as their clients and their needs. Through working with their clients to clarify project goals, they search for the best program based response, not necessarily the most obvious or expected one. Continually engaging their clients throughout the process, that response is carefully analyzed, challenged, and refined, rendering it into architecture that not only meets programmatic requirements but inspires, nurtures, and celebrates the user and observer as well. Neel, a graduate of UT Austin and Principal of ooA, became a registered architect in 1985 and opened his first office in 1986. With more than thirty years of experience, Neel has successfully designed and managed the construction of a large variety of projects including office buildings, recreational facilities, restaurants, churches, medical facilities, private residences, and multi-family developments including a co-housing project in Arizona. While employed by a real estate development firm, Neel spent seven years focused in the construction industry, being in charge of construction activities for custom single family residences, cluster homes, and townhouses. A long time interest in sustainable design led Neel to exploring such alternative building materials as adobe, rammed earth, straw bale, structural insulated panels, and more recently, insulated concrete forms (ICFs).

After talking to several architects, I selected the Neel Morton to design my new home near Dripping Springs. From the initial planning discussions through construction, Neel and Dax Morton were easy to work with, responsive to my ideas and suggestions, and very knowledgeable about the green building techniques that were very important to me. Following our initial discussions and site visit to develop the design program, they prepared a conceptual design that captured my “must have” features in a layout and orientation that avoided damage to the numerous trees on the lot. Proceeding to final design, Neel and Dax incorporated details and materials that addressed my desire for an open and airy feel taking advantage of natural light and breeze. They also addressed my requirement for energy efficient with excellent recommendations for doors and windows, lighting, insulation, on-demand water heaters and more. The house has a thoroughly modern appearance while incorporating traditional hill country materials – stone, wood, metal roof. Neel recommended several local contractors and handled the bidding. During construction Neel and Dax worked with the contractor to promptly address any questions. Building went smoothly and the contractor commented that that Neel and Dax’s well-prepared plan set was instrumental in allowing him to complete the project on schedule. I had a great experience working with Neel and Dax and watching the house progress from ideas to plans to move-in ready. Having lived in the house for a while now, I can say that life flows and functions easily here. Everyone who has seen it agrees that this is a unique and beautifully designed home.

We had an excellent experience with Neel. We used his Office of Architecture to design and follow up on the building of our new house. He was able to put in architectural plans our ideas plus suggest very good changes when needed. His initial questionnaire methodology was very helpful to envision the time line and the different things involved from beginning to end of the building process. His follow up with the builder and the different suppliers was very thorough making sure he matched the quality and price we had agreed on previously. Neel's fees were also very close to the original budget he had given us. For anyone trying to build a home with unique characteristics, we highly recommend him.

We hired Neel Morton and the Office of Architecture to design a contemporary home with a nod to Midcentury aesthetics which we are building in in the Texas Hill Country. As home builders, we look for people who are aware of budget constraints, easy to work with, and well-versed in their field. Neel is all this and much more. Professional and talented, he understands the craft of building, as well as the artistry involved. He's creative, practical and also knows all about the latest products. The highest recommendation I can give is to say that I would use an individual again and that's definitely the case with Neel.

We hired Neel as our architect after interviewing about seven architects who we found through the San Antonio and Austin green builders networks. We immedialtely felt very comfortable with him. He was clearly very experienced and knowledgeable on green building as well as being easy to talk to and discuss ideas with. He always listened, was informative and straight-talking. When we asked our short-list of 3 architects to each give us a written estimate of what the job would cost, Neel did it right away. At the end of the job (design, site visits during construction, advice), it all came out 100% as he had estimated. The house we wanted Neel to design was to be built for the Texas Hill Country climate and to perform so that we could try and avoid completely the use of air conditoning. We had been thinking about the design for years and studying up on materials and design. We presented Neel with our ideas and he came back with the question of was he free to try what he thought would be the best design (vs what we had been thinking about). We, of course, agreed (why else would you hire a professional?) and he came up with a design that was nothing like what we had been considering but that we instantly liked and understood as being much better than what we had been thinking about. The house is completed now. We liked in on paper and we like it a whole lot more now that it is a reality. We recommend Neel very, very highly.

It was a joy to work with Neel. He designed a house and guest house for me on undeveloped land. Neel assisted, and educated me, throughout the entire process, pre-design through construction, and was always available to help. He even met the electric company with me to discuss placing the utility poles and had trees removed at the last minute that would have impeded the electric company. Neel is a fabulous listener. He was able to take my descriptions of how I wanted to live in a house and my often vague ideas of style and create a beautiful and functional house that flows exactly how I imagined living. I spoke about what was important functionally but did not have a vision of what this looked like. When I saw the house rendering I realized how deeply Neel understood what I could only speak of abstractly. What was important to me was concretely shown in his design. Neel is a perfectionist and it shows in the aesthetics of his lines. One of the most beautiful things about my house is the visual and material continuity of the interior and exterior. The exterior walls appear to continue inside the house. Also, Neel was invaluable throughout construction. I sought his guidance when unexpected issues arose and he was my advocate to ensure that the same attention to detail in his plans was reflected in the finished product. I highly recommend working with Neel. I spoke of “feel” and “flow” and “function” and Neel brought that to life through form. He is honorable and fair and creates designs of exceeding beauty and integrity.

Neel is wonderful. He is so easy to work with. He listens and designs exactly what you ask but also includes his own knowledge of green design and artistry to add beautiful and functional touches. He has designed three homes for us and the largest he assisted with the construction process. We will be using him again for another home we will be building in the future.

We worked with Neel about a year prior to building our house. He was hands on from the very beginning. He helped us select our building site(he actually rented a bobcat and found openings in the brush looking for the best views). He then took my wife's modern request and mixed it with my more rustic approach and designed a dream vacation home. Neel is very knowledgeable on the use and importance of green building materials which were used throughout the house. His attention to detail and job supervision were key to the success of the project. I highly recommend Neel for someone that is looking for an architect that is thoughtful and passionate about his work. Go to wimberley private residence for pictures.

I would highly recommend Neel. After interviewing a handful of Austin architects, yy husband and I hired Neel (out of WImberley, TX) to help us draw plans for a small bunkhouse (~1500 sq. ft) on some property we own in the Texas hill country. We wanted to use an ICF product for the house and Neel is very well versed in drawing plans using ICF (Insulated concrete forms). The product produces a home that is not only incredibly energy efficient, the walls are over 12" thick and give a fortress like feel within a small space. The house has blown us away. Neel took a small footprint and created a truly unique space that flows so well it feels twice as big as the plans indicate. The ceilings soar close to 20 feet and he has truly gone the extra mile to help source some beautiful timbers for us to use for the ceiling, beams and porches. His involvement throughout the whole project has helped us stay on schedule and budget. It is evident that he takes great pride in his work and sees our bunkhouse as a work of art (which it is). We are so pleased and will post pictures of the entire project soon.
