Matter is a design and fabrication studio shaped around the concept of building as a form of research, experimentation, and discovery. Led by Erin Pellegrino and Charlie Firestone, Matter believes that making and thinking are inextricably linked, and therefore occurring simultaneously and harmoniously. Matter strives to develop procedures and methods of creating that build in and upon memory.
The studio works across different scales and materials, spanning architecture, furniture, objects, and corporeal experiences. Matter takes a holistic approach, focusing on problem-solving through iteration and invention. The team is nimble, dedicated, and completely enmeshed in the design and making process, allowing Matter to move quickly and craft solutions that transcend the expected.
Principal and Founder Erin Pellegrino has been recognized with an Autodesk BUILDSpace Fellowship, AIA New England Design Honor Award, the Core 77 Design Award in Built Environment, two Architizer A+ awards, a Paul M. Heffernan International Fellowship, and a nomination for the EU Mies Van der Rohe Award. Her work on Alpine Shelter Skuta was featured on the cover of Phaidon Press’s publication, Environmental Living.
