In our practice we offer suggestions and advice – as do all architects. We make serious efforts to discuss the pros and cons of planning and design decisions and involve our clients in every decision. That said, we do take to heart when a client says we were not respectful of their budget.
Every homeowner has a budget. We have to honor those budgets. We always recommend that projects be estimated by contractors at the conclusion of the schematic design phase and prior to preparing the construction documents. We have found this to be a good way to determine if the original budget is reasonable; if not, the homeowner has options – commit more resources to the project or work with the design team to revise the work to fit within the budget.
In this instance, Eric and Clarissa chose to use a relative as the General Contractor. We were not made aware of the construction costs in the contract that was based on the Construction Documents. It was our understanding that there would be cost savings because the work was being done by a family member. So, to say were not respectful of their budget is not true.
We’re disappointed in their experience as we had a different understanding of the situation. We’re still hopeful that they will respond to us so we can discuss their experiences and come to a mutual understanding.
