J. W. “Willie” Dalrymple, CPBD, FAIBD, has been a professional custom residential and light commercial designer for 30+ years. His career began with an architectural firm in Rocky Mount, NC. Two years later, a move to the southeastern North Carolina coast presented new opportunities with one of the state’s largest firms, involving him in such interesting projects as the renovation and restoration of historic Thalian Hall in downtown Wilmington. Since establishing his own firm, JW Dalrymple Residential Design Associates, Inc., Willie successfully completed the national certification exam administered by the National Council for Building Designer Certification (CPBD). He is an active Professional Member of the American Institute of Building Design (AIBD), which offers seminars and other educational opportunities and requires a minimum number of continuing education units each year. Willie is a past president of the NC Society of AIBD, and served for several years as a North Carolina delegate to the National American Institute of Building Design. Willie currently serves as President of the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Institute of Building Design in the Wilmington NC area. He was also involved with the Cape Fear Green Building Alliance as it was being organized in New Hanover County, NC, and enjoys designing homes that incorporate environmentally responsible materials and design. As a Certified FORTIFIED Wise Professional (by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety), he incorporates FORTIFIED Wise standards into his designs, particularly his coastal designs. These design standards qualify the homeowner to receive a FORTIFIED designation on their home, which lowers their insurance rates substantially. One of Willie's home designs was featured in the Spring 1999 issue of Better Homes & Gardens Home Plan Ideas. In 2012, Willie was named Designer of the Year at the AIBD National Convention. In 2016, he was inducted into the prestigious College of Fellows of the American Institute of Building Design, the highest recognition within the organization.
