I work in construction and worked on a house he designed, which I immediately fell in love with! So I chose to go with Hans to design my own house and he did an excellent job I got exactly what I wanted with the layout of the house and I just had him come up with a look for the exterior as that was something I just wasn't sure what I wanted and he did an amazing job! I will recommend him to anyone I know that needs an architect.

Absolutely wonderful! Hans created a space for us to be creative, to entertain, to inspire, and to admire the beauty that surrounds us. He captured mountains up close, thunderstorms rolling through the valley, and wildlife on the hillside, all within a 15-minute ride to center city. He spent time on the property during the design phase, to see our various concerns, and heard the subtleties we suggested. He incorporated our requests in a design that flows with efficiency that both compliments and complements its style. We gladly recommend Hans!

Hans was wonderful to work with on our project. The pre-work Hans did I believe really made the construction go much more smoothly. Little details were thought through and would have been a big pain if they were not thought about during the architectural work. He literally went with me to the City in order to get the proper permits and paperwork. Hans took the time to be cost conscience and found a much better deal on a structural engineer than the first firm we were going to use. I thought this was cool because we were already assuming we were going to pay the amount of the original engineering calculation estimates.

As first-time homebuilders (and me having no experience at all!), Hans was able to make all of our dreams and ideas come true, and if ever there was an issue, he explained very simply the problem of why that exact idea wouldn't be possible, but always still offered 2 or 3 similar options. Very calm, explains as much or as little as you want, and very eager to listen. Even when we had trouble with the city, he went out of his way to make it right to make sure we got our dream home! All his deadlines were met, but unfortunately an outside engineer he used slowed the process down quite a bit. You can never plan for everything, so slow-downs and hold-up's like engineers' personal problems have to be expected, I guess! Cost was what we expected for such a prestigious architect in the region, but we still ended up saving money in the long run by going with him right from the get-go.

Resubmitting after project is completed. I was referred to Hans by a friend to complete deck structural engineer drawings and an entry remodel. This was my first time using an architect and my experience has not been positive. The deck drawings we received and submitted for permit were not executable. My contractor and myself called Hans multiple times when we encountered problems, but he was not responsive and when finally connecting, not helpful with evolving the construction. We ended up working directly with the building department to change the structure to fit the space. When we started our entry project after the winter season, the drawings we submitted for permits were not accurate in measurement. He was off not by inches, but feet. The design completely changed. When my contractor noted this, we elected not to call him as he was unhelpful before, but again worked with the city and changed the measurements on paper to resubmit the accurate measurements to the building dept. The project changed substantially in design because the drawings weren't accurate. Also, he did not know we needed two unique permits; when we informed him, he had no idea this was the requirement. We thought we hired someone to help shepherd us through the permits and to help in construction and thought he would be knowledgeable on the city's codes and requirements. His mistakes have cost us additional dollars to stop construction, change the design, resubmit permits, which delayed work. When my contractor and I informed him on his mistakes, he informed us that his drawings, which we submitted for permits were "illustrative only" and he wasn't responsible for the accuracy of the measurements. Silly us for assuming when he came onsite to take all the measurements, they would be accurate. Even the bldg dept was confused with the submitted drawings noting the codes applied weren't relevant. Any change he made to the drawings would cost us, would take a week or two to redo, stopping work .... and then resubmit to the city - wasting a lot of time and dollars. Not once did Hans call us to inquire about our project (Hi! hows it going? etc), even after calling him multiple times for help, and not once coming onsite before or during the deck construction, even after calling him for help. If we need another architect, I would try and find a different one. someone who is more accountable and knowledgeable about the city's codes and provides accurate drawings. Maybe our project was just too small to care and he is suited for much larger ones.
