BIO: Duncan Stroik’s architectural practice grows out of a commitment to the principles of classical architecture and urbanism. Stroik’s education and career have closely paralleled the evolution of the international classical movement, and his work has been instrumental in the new renaissance of sacred architecture. Stroik received his architectural education from the University of Virginia and Yale University. In 1990, Stroik was invited to help form and implement a new curriculum in classical architecture at the University of Notre Dame. Stroik’s design work and essays on architecture have been featured widely in print and his work has also been featured on television. He is a frequent lecturer on the principles of traditional architecture and Catholic church design. Stroik’s involvement in the new renaissance of sacred architecture has led to the formation of the Society for Catholic Liturgy and the journal Sacred Architecture, of which he is editor. He is considered one of the foremost educators and practitioners in sacred architecture today. It is Stroik’s belief that a revival of sacred architecture is central to any true renaissance of architecture and civil society. We hired Mr. Stroik to design our community chapel. We were very pleased with Mr. Stroik's knowledge of classical architecture and sense of proportion. Because of his extensive study of the past masters of architecture, especially Palladio, Mr. Stroik creates spaces that inspire and feel comfortable at the same time. Mr. Stroik's artistic sensibilities set him apart from many other architects, yet he is also quite practical when it comes to issues of budget and construction. I highly recommend Mr. Stroik. Rev. Professor Stroik and his team completed two projects for me at the Cathedral of Saint Paul in St. Paul, MN. As a great historic landmark, there was the need to be very sensitive to making sure that these projects would blend in seamlessly. One was the restoration of the architectural context for the cathedra (archbishop's chair) which required extensive study of historic photographs. The other was the alteration of the original (but never executed) design for the gallery pipe organ's casework. The restoration of the organ allowed for the casework to be finally built but the desire was not to block the magnificent rose window as the original had envisioned. Professor Stroik masterfully kept the spirit and design elements of the original plan but wrapped it around to frame the window.
