I started my career in remodeling as a carpenter. There is no question that this background and experience has made me a better designer. When I enter a home, I quite literally have X-Ray vision. I know how the space was put together. I understand the fundamentals of structural engineering. Yet it takes more than this to be a successful professional building designer. It is important to study architectural history, particularly the various styles of traditional residential architecture, so you understand proper proportion, balance and style. I have an instinct for space planning. I study and pay attention to flow, patterns of living and lifestyle. I am ever vigilant to what is new and available in cabinets, plumbing fixtures, fireplaces, appliances, surface materials etc. so I can make educated recommendations and suggestions to my clients. This includes an understanding of best practices and current trends relating to universal design. Too often, significant money is spent on home improvements that overlook the subtle, but all-too-important design details that would age-proof the work and seamlessly incorporate the extra comfort and ease of use that everyone should enjoy. I understand the basics of HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems. Additionally, it is important to know how to use and detail the installation of various types of building materials. I have a passion for design and an eye for detail. My experience is vast with familiarity designing projects across a broad range of styles and budgets.
