We recently completed a full home renovation and had the pleasure of working with Andrew and Chad throughout the process.
Our initial meeting with Andrew put us at ease as he was low pressure and prioritized transparency. After meeting Chad, our project manager I immediately appreciated thoroughness and honesty.
Throughout the renovation I found that both Chad and Andrew were always available to chat, managed the project well and were open with us, giving us the opportunity to make the big decisions with lots of information and consultation. Moreover, the quality of work was fantastic and I remain impressed nine months following the completion of the project.
I continue to be impressed with Chad's follow ups months after the renovations are completed. It is clear that he prioritizes the client's satisfaction over the long term, which speaks to his interest in doing quality work.
I would highly recommend Alair to anyone that I know and, should the opportunity arise in the future, I would definitely work with them again.

We hired Black General Contracting to do a major gut reno of our turn-of-the-century brick semi in Toronto's east end. We chose them after looking into several other contractors who had also come highly recommended. Black GC did not disappoint! In fact, they were fantastic. Andrew was amazing to work with -- even when our extensive project hit a few snags here and there, he was the consummate professional and always made sure we were happy. We took a run-down house and stripped it of everything but the floor joists, brick walls, and roof. For the most part, the project ran smoothly, thanks in part to the amazing online project calendaring tool that Black GC uses (there's an app for it, too!). It was one of the reasons we hired them, and it proved to be invaluable. We had a long-term view of the project plan through online calendars, with all of the various tradespeople scheduled along a clear timeline. When things needed to shift, we could see these change in the timeline. We always knew, each day, what had been done and where things were headed: Andrew and his team provided photo documentation almost every day of their progress, which was posted to the online calendar. Black GC stated from the outset that they value transparency and that's really what we feel we got. They stayed on target for the estimate, and while they were costly, their quote was comparable to the other recommended contractors we also approached. We feel we got value, amazing service, and have a great home we love. We would hire them again in a heartbeat and would recommend them to anyone planning a large project, without hesitation.

Taking on a home renovation may be your second biggest investment next to your house. Which is why it requires you to do your research, find the right contractor and check their references, even if all that checks out you’re still taking a risk working with someone that you haven’t worked with before. If you’re here reading this review considering Black, then you’re already ahead of the game. At least you’ve begun doing that vital research. We hired Black General Contracting to complete a first floor gut and remodel, David Steckel original met with us back in September of 2014 and began the long process of outlining exactly what we’d need. My wife and I work in a creative field and decided that this was something we’d like to take on without a designer. That choice may not be for everyone, but for us it was an exciting opportunity. It wasn’t a flawless experience, but at least the mistakes we made were our own. David was patient in guiding us through all the steps required for us to take on this task. Over the next few months we did all the groundwork to move forward, at which point David prepared a detailed schedule that highlighted all the milestones that would be hit over the 8-week construction period. We packed the house and moved into a small condo around the corner where we could keep a close eye on the work being done. Black’s communication during this period was a crucial key to their success, at no point was I surprised with some unforeseen expense, as a matter of fact almost all of our overages were a result of us reconfiguring our design choices during the construction process. In the end Black managed to finish the work within the 8-week window and we moved back into the house the day that David promised we would. Our budget expanded, but it did so on our terms and David kept us informed on all additional expenses that came about as a result of our budding design ideas.
Black General Contracting’s professionalism, attention to detail and the quality of their workmanship are why I’ve decided to review them. They've made this experience a huge success for us and everyday since my wife and have enjoyed our new and improved home.

These guys were just awesome and EXTREMELY professional. We were stuck on a project (due to issues with a previous contractor). The Black General team came in, took care of everything, and everything was on budget and on time (as much as humanly possible). If I ever do a reno again, I would definitely go with the Black General team for the whole project.
