For over 35 years House + House Architects have crafted intimate, personal architecture. Through careful analysis, Steven and Cathi House mold each project into a unique, magical and harmonious environment. Deeply sensitive to elements of form, color, natural light, and movement, House + House creates a tangible spirit within each home, molded to the process of living. Committed to sustainability, their work focuses on enduring design principles incorporating natural light and ventilation, passive solar heating, grey/rain water systems, recycled materials, the development of microclimates and strong connections to the outdoors.    House + House has produced a diverse body of work reflecting their passion for site specific, well choreographed buildings in California, Florida, Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean. In 1989 "Architecture" magazine featured House + House in their Discovery Issue on emerging talent. Since then, they have received over 50 design awards and their work has been featured in numerous national and international publications including two monographs, "House + House Architects: Choreographing Space" (1999) and "Houses in the Sun: light movement embrace" (2008). Steven and Cathi have lectured extensively throughout the United States and Mexico, and both have served on the Dean's Advisory Board and the Advisory Council for the School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech. They have established CASA, The Center for Architecture, Sustainability + Art, a study abroad program based in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.   For over 40 years they have traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America documenting vernacular architecture. Their stunning book, "Mediterranean Villages: An Architectural Journey", (2004), celebrates their investigations of villages throughout the Mediterranean - the hilltowns of central Italy, the Aegean Islands of Greece, the Dalmatian coast and the Andalusian region of southern Spain. Their most recently published book, "Villages of West Africa: an intimate journey across time" (2018), documents the people, land, villages, textiles and vernacular architecture across seven countries in West Africa.

If you begin with Louis Sullivan’s “Form Follows Function,” then add a dose of humanity, you have codified the approach to architectural design utilized by Cathi and Steven House of House & House Architects. Our home, excemplifies the H&H process for defining a living space that functions well in spacial movement, and as required for our lifestyle, light saturation and natural air circulation. Completed in 2018, we move through the small, lot constrained, space and remind ourselves that, “yes, we do deserve to live in this beautiful, interesting and highly functional contemporary space.” We are grateful to H&H for the process that has so successfully driven the appropriateness of our home in Mexico.

Building a home in San Miguel de Allende with Cathi and Steven House and their building team led by Guadalupe Gonzales has been an adventure. The building of the house took twice as long as we were told to expect, and that took its toll on my husband and me, but now that it is finally finished, we are happy. Imagine a lot twenty feet wide by one hundred feet long. (Yes, twenty feet wide!) Thanks to House+House and the skill of their team, what has emerged on this small space is nothing short of a miracle. Tall stone pillars greet you as you enter. The house meanders; people get lost in it. Nothing feels small; it feels BIG. It has attitude, but it's gentle. This house is a work of art. Our two major goals were to maximize light and air. House+House have done that and much more. Multiple patio spaces pull light and air throughout the structure. Skylights, large and small, abound. Surfaces, shapes and colors provide rhythm throughout. Shadows change as the sun moves through the sky from hour to hour, from season to season. It's more than a house; it's an experience. Confession: I'm horrible at reading plans. I didn't get excited about the house plan on paper. It looked OK; I just couldn't picture it. Then as as the structure emerged and revealed itself in 3D, it knocked my socks off. Over and over again, I discovered things -- skylights, angles, shadows -- and fell deeply in love with what I saw. Cathi is brilliant. She and Steven are kind, warm, thoughtful people. They care about their work -- about its quality, integrity and how it will fit into the present and future San Miguel. Long after we are gone, this home will be a place of peace and beauty.

If you want architects to do your remodel that will give you your perfect home then, please consider Cathi and Steven House of House + House Architects as your architect team. I found them while searching through Houzz looking for a style I liked for the remodeling of my retirement home. I was attracted to a beautiful bathroom they had designed, the color of the wall, the swoop of the tub and its color were visually exciting. When looking at more of their fabulous work as featured on their website, I realized I wanted their touch on my remodel. I sent an email to them from the link on the Houzz page and was promptly answered. After meeting with them in their San Francisco office I signed the contract and their remodeling magic design began. The remodel drawings were done in a short time frame and they worked well with my contractor. They not only recommended structural changes but also, design elements, fixture elements, lighting and color combinations to make my home beautiful for me. When I needed to cut the project into two parts do to financial issues they were very accommodating in cutting the project into two parts. Part one was completed in February 2016 and part two was completed in November 2016. I now live in my retirement home with all of the elements coming together making me feel like I am truly coming home to my beautiful home that reflects my style. Had a great relationship with the architects of our project. We had a remodel on our house purchased in San Miguel de Allende. They gave us a great design and advice on getting the kitchen and dining room addition. They were available through the project and kept us informed throughout.

Steven and Cathi House were the architects on our home remodel in San Francisco. We both began and ended the project in 2016 and were overjoyed at not only their design work, but on how they worked with the City, with our builder and how they incorporated what was important to us into the project. They begin with a detailed questionnaire, that you fill out separately from your partner, about how you live in your space and move through your home. They incorporate all that information into creating spaces that use light, angles, social needs, privacy needs and design priorities - creating a home we can't wait to get back to each night. They worked seamlessly with the City of San Francisco (which is no small task) and suggested a builder that fit our project and our personalities. They take pride in their projects and worked tirelessly to make sure we got what we wanted. Our budget was small but that did not deter them from pushing for the finest materials and finishes to maximize the resources we did have. Lastly, they respected the history in our home (built in 1900) and helped us preserve what was worth saving and modernizing that which needed it! I recommend them wholeheartedly.

Cathi and Steven are stellar designers and thoughtful communicators. They also have well-evolved relationships with the contractors they work, ensuring best pricing and coordination. We dared to take this remodel on while engage and veering towards a wedding. Thanks to them, the remodel was smooth and we made it joyfully and stress-free to the wedding!

We worked with House+House back in 1990 for our major kitchen/ family room remodeling. We’re totally thrilled with the transformation, the project was published in numerous local and international publications back then. We enjoyed our remodeling ever since and still looks very updated today as visitor would not believe it was done so long ago… This year, 25 years later, we decided to update our master bath so we contacted Steven and Cathi to see if they can work with us on such a small project and yes, it was a blessing that they did and once again, the transformation was as awesome as we expected. Steven and Cathi are such perfectionist in every aspect, with their expertise on light, form and function…the project have became another art piece in our house by House + House. Thank you so much!

Earlier this year in 2015 we had a one bedroom one bath addition to our 1886 Victorian home completed. The 800 square-foot two-story addition was designed by the architectural firm of House and House with the overriding theme being a matched continuation of the existing Victorian elements. This request was masterfully met from all angles of our new addition which has received a continuing array of praise from friends and neighbors alike. As the original house is located on a fairly steep grade, much consideration was given to the inclusion of an additional 400 ft.² walk-in basement and retaining wall which, when tied together with the original structure, greatly enhance the overall long-term foundational integrity of our house. With the 17 windows incorporated and second-story completely open floorplan, there is natural light brightening up all rooms which includes a master bedroom, a large walk-in closet, a tiled full bathroom and walk-in shower and a second smaller walk-in closet along with the 400sf 2nd story sewing/Ebay/work room. All interior details, wiring, lighting, switches, stairs, windows, doors, etc. were fully considered with functionality and aesthetics being wonderfully attained. Both of us were super happy with all aspects of our new addition.

We highly recommend House & House Architects. My husband and I just finished our remodel on our Mystic, Ct home. The work involved a roof line adjustment, a foundation to support the new enlarged kitchen and removing existing walls to open the kitchen to the dining area and front gathering area. The completed project was even more beautiful than we envisioned. What we love about their designs is the ability to simplify the living space, open up spaces and let in lots more light. Looking at the approved plans I was able to envision the new space and understand all that was going to happen. Cathi and Steven House are very warm and understanding people with excellent communication skills. They listened carefully to what we wanted and gave us that plus much more. The attention to detail is outstanding. They envision how we will live in our new space and anticipate our needs. Inviting the outside beauty inside is also what they accomplish beautifully. During the construction process they worked closely with our general contractor and they were readily available to us if we had a question or concern. Our contractor, Salt Box Kitchens, in Mystic, CT. was wonderful to work with.

It was the most creative experience we had working with Cathi and Steven House which resulted in the dream house being finished next week in San Miguel de Allende. Cathi House understood and translated our wishes and desires and designed a house that is unique to us and blends perfectly into the Mexican neighborhood and the historic style of this magical city.

Steven and Cathi House helped me remodel and redesign my house this year (2014) -- a house that they had originally designed over ten years ago long before I had purchased the home. They were wonderful to work with from beginning to end -- so full of wonderfully creative and out-of-the-box ideas. They helped me manage the renovation in a way that helped build my own aesthetic into the house while still respecting the overall look and feel of the home. They also had a great sense of what to splurge on and what was not worth the extra money -- something that was incredibly helpful as I tried to mind my renovation budget. Additionally, they have a remarkable talent for combining together different colors, materials and textures. They made some suggestions about carpets and wall colors that I was not really sure about, but I put my trust in them and they did not steer me wrong!

I worked with House & House on our Mill Valley remodel in 2014. They brought to the project a focus and vision that made our decision making process simple and clear. Their attention to detail was truly incredible as they constantly brought up points that we would never have considered on our own. Most importantly their ability to help us prioritize and make decisions when my wife and I found ourselves at an impasse was critical to keep the project on track. I highly recommend House + House
