Pick your floor finish carefully To swerve scuffs and marks, avoid light flooring material in the entrance area.or choose a floor finish that is “forgiving” of dirt. eg floor tiles that appear white – and are therefore reflective – but which have enough “movement” [for example a flecking or graining or speckling] to disguise a light sprinkling of dust or dirt. With timber flooring, choose a heavily brushed finish, as it will make all future imperfections look less obvious.
The stairs originally had carpet on them and were in pretty bad condition underneath. We tried sanding them and, in the end, we painted the treads and risers, partly as a damage limitation exercise. It was cheap and honest – it’s true to the feel of the place.” The pale grey sections are painted in the same colour as the internal doors. Stair treads painted in Hague Blue; risers painted in Dimpse, both Farrow & Ball.
The designer added a new oak vanity unit in a Scandi style. As the bathroom isn’t large, the plan was originally for a wall-mounted design, but structural issues prevented it. However, the slim legs of this model keep the floor on show, achieving the same spacious feel a wall-hung unit would. Noir Craft basin unit; Noir Square basin, both Bathstore. Patsy mirror, Habitat.

Focus on details An interesting detail can elevate an ordinary space. The birchwood layer to this back wall, for instance, continues the surface into the window reveal, which helps to make the room look much more finished.

Revive the staircase Original staircases can be a bit wonky at times, but in most cases they can be refurbished to their original glory, without compromising on a contemporary look – you can create a modern space by working with the traditional design. In this beautiful renovation, the staircase has been integrated into the modern space. The structure is in the traditional style, but by blocking out the stairs in black, the designers have added a contemporary twist.
Trick the eye This de Gournay semi-wallpapered cupboard is a classic way to create ‘secret’ storage in a bedroom, and prevents the beautiful design from being chopped up with shelving or furniture. The idea could also be used across a bank of built-in wardrobes. This would, however, be an extremely tricky bit of decorating, and hiring an expert will help you to achieve a flawless finish.
LED strip lighting recessed into the back wall of the front bedroom is a good way to add lighting up high on the sloped ceiling, and is energy-efficient, too.
The walls in the nursery have been painted with a product that’s a combination of lime and graphene, a super-material that’s extremely strong and durable. It also has super-conductivity properties, allowing it to thermally regulate the home. Wall paint, Graphenstone.
Light switches and sockets are made from unlacquered copper, which has natural anti-bacterial properties. Brushed copper switch, Vari-Lite.
Ecospheric The cloakroom loo has a basin on top of the cistern, which helps to recycle water. When the toilet is flushed, fresh water comes through the tap, for hand-washing, and is then stored in the cistern below ready to be used to flush next time. Water throughout the home is heated by a clever hot-water tank, which uses technology to heat only what’s needed. The home’s energy is provided by photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof and, as the house generates more power than it uses, the owners can sell electricity back to the National Grid. Ecospheric The rear of the property is super-insulated like the side wall, but here it’s clad with a pre-fossilised timber. “The wood is prematurely aged, which makes it maintenance-free and gives it this attractive pale colour,” Ellie explains. The windows on the first floor are positioned to face south to maximise solar gain. The path is laid with wood reclaimed from the property’s joists, and the garden wall is constructed from reclaimed bricks. Cladding, OrganoWood.
Ecospheric There’s no expensive central heating system in the house; instead, clever ventilation has been fitted. This mechanical ventilation with heat recovery system (MVHR) is essentially a series of ducts that flow through the house and extract stale air from humid rooms, such as the kitchen, utility room and bathroom, replacing it with air from outside. A heat exchanger box uses the stale air to heat the fresh air, which is then distributed evenly around the house. “We also included a Defra-approved wood-burning stove, but as a cosy feature rather than an essential heat source,” designer Ellie Knowles says. “It’s room sealable, which means it uses air from outside the property rather than sucking warm air from inside.”
The kitchen was made by local cabinet-maker John George out of solid timber, which is durable enough to last for years. “We use English timbers, and often source them from a sustainable online hub called TreeStation,” he says.
Ecospheric As well as making the house green, the team wanted to restore the beautiful period elements of the original building. Unglazed Victorian mosaic tiles were laid along the front path and in the hallway, and traditional plaster cornicing, ceiling roses and mouldings were custom-made and fitted throughout the house. The couple were keen to have their own bathroom that could only be accessed from their bedroom. Celine accommodated this with a clever wardrobe design. The wall of closets opens up to access storage for clothes and accessories – but one of the doors reveals the bathroom behind.

In the bathroom, Beth used the same pink zellige tiles as in the kitchen and teamed them with floor tiles and worktops in a dark limestone.
