Pro Spotlight: Go With the Flow to Bring Harmony to Your Home
A Winter Park designer shares her tips for creating a feel-good space for you and your guests

Who: Abigail Rizor of Wolfe-Rizor Interiors
Where: Winter Park, Florida
In her own words: “Your home should be your sanctuary, where you can relax and forget about work and the troubles of your day. That’s what I’m striving for.”
It might not be easy to pinpoint exactly what gives a home a good flow, but it definitely can be felt. Flow includes not only how you move around a space but also how people engage with your home and with one another.
“Good design has flow from room to room and from the inside to the outside,” says Abigail Rizor, partner at Wolfe-Rizor Interiors in Winter Park with her mother, Hattie Wolfe. “It gives the house a nicer feel and makes it easy to live in and entertain in.”

In the shop. From an early age, Rizor noticed that her home was different from other homes. “At a time when people used to buy any sofa just because they needed a sofa, I grew up in a house that was designed,” she says. “My mom was constantly doing things to our house. I’d come home and there would be wallpaper on the ceiling, or furniture would be moved around.”
Rizor earned a master’s degree in journalism but was drawn to design. After working at high-end fabric maker Clarence House, she started Wolfe-Rizor Interiors with her mother.

A natural fit. “Design is just in my blood,” Rizor says. “I get a high off of trying to make a room for a client the best it can be. Whatever their vision is, I want to make that happen for them. People spend so much time in their home, it should be a place that they like to be.”
Want a better flow in your home? Rizor’s tips below can help.

1. Create Open Spaces
Doing away with a formal dining room in favor of a great room that flows from the kitchen to the dining area and into the living space encourages families and friends to congregate. “Great rooms create a very casual and simplified way of living that opens up the whole house,” Rizor says. She designed the open space in Winter Park seen here to give her clients the ability to spend more time together and entertain guests more easily.

2. Pick a Palette
Color is a great way to create a cohesive flow. For example, Rizor used a palette of soft taupes and grays in every room of this Orlando home. “As you walk through the home, the colors make an easy transition from one room to the next,” she says. “If every room looks different, it can be jarring.”
In addition, because the colors all work together, Rizor can use bolder design elements. The chandelier seen here, for example, was made from a Greek sponge basket. “Just because everything flows together doesn’t mean the design has to be boring,” she says.

3. Incorporate Natural Transitions
Flow doesn’t pertain only to the indoors. “Good flow can make sure the outside and inside feel like they’re one,” Rizor says.
Clients in New Smyrna Beach hired Rizor to design their home’s interior and then later to do the patio, seen here. “We wanted to bring the outside inside to reflect the same style, as if the whole house was flowing from interior to exterior,” she says. Motorized screens can close off the space to shield it from bugs without compromising the homeowners’ outdoor experience.
