The boathouse that inspired the project was renovated and updated with all of today’s modern comforts. “It’s like a little living room on the water,” Gustafson says.Browse more homes by style: Apartments | Barn Homes | Colorful Homes | Contemporary Homes | Eclectic Homes | Farmhouses | Floating Homes | Guesthouses | Homes Around the World | Lofts | Midcentury Homes | Modern Homes | Ranch Homes | Small Homes | Townhouses | Traditional Homes | Transitional Homes | Vacation Homes
During rainy summer days or winter blizzards, the family can gather on the lower level to play games while enjoying views of the lake and weather from large horizontal windows. They chose the wallpaper because it resembles wood slats.“Whenever the homeowners ask their kids where they’d like to go on a family trip, they always say their own lodge in Minnesota,” Dirkes says. “It’s the perfect place for bringing the whole family together for relaxation and play.”More home tours: Apartments | Small Homes | Colorful Homes | Contemporary Homes | Eclectic Homes | Farmhouses | Midcentury Homes | Modern Homes | Ranch Homes | Traditional Homes | Transitional Homes | All
Dirkes used mosaic tiles to create the plaid-patterned back wall in the kitchen. She then brought in metal elements such as the brackets and foot rail attached to the island, the wood-and-metal counter stools and the custom zinc range hood to bring an industrial touch to the rustic space. White upper cabinets brighten the space, and the lower grain ash cabinets appear to float with LED strips lighting underneath. The countertops are marble.Browse industrial counter stools
The front door also opens to a floor-to-ceiling view of the lake. “We needed a large volume in the great room to capture the lake views,” Dirkes says. The massive fireplace of gray-toned ledge stones in a dry-stack arrangement anchors the space.A custom-built bar in the back right corner of the great room is a popular spot for the homeowners and their adult friends to gather in the evening.
The main entrance opens to a grand living area that features a mix of rustic and coastal looks. The reclaimed timber beams and large stone fireplace provide the feel of a woodsy lodge while the white-washed paneled walls and natural light help soften the look. The X-shaped railings on the second-floor balcony provide an additional wood accent in the room.

Though the industrial condo already had high-quality fits and finishes, the homeowners wanted a space with more warmth and character. Salter knew she wanted to marry the central feature wall to the rest of the room’s aesthetic, so she looked at a couple of options. Its shallow depth precluded a standard fireplace, and though she and the homeowners entertained the idea of putting in an electric ribbon-style fireplace, they decided a TV would be the best fit here for lifestyle and comfort.
