Pantry, en-suite and maybe the hallway/kitchen door
Open up your splashback Though you’d typically have tiles, stone, quartz or back-painted glass behind a worktop, the area can provide the perfect opportunity to boost light levels, and offer a further link to the outdoors. This ribbon of glazing is in the home of designer Denise O’Connor of Optimise Home. “I really wanted to get some secondary light into the space,” she says. “As the rest of the glazing [in the room] is in the form of doors, it was also a chance to have a window you could just pop open.” What about keeping it clean? “The counter is a little bit deeper, so [the window] is a little bit further back, but it’s pretty easy to keep clean [anyway],” she says.
Swap base unit cupboards for drawers “Base unit drawers [are] another way to optimise your storage,” Simon says. “Drawers are so versatile, and are almost always soft close these days. They’ll take a lot of weight – up to 70kg with some brands – so you can store everything from potatoes to entire dinner sets in them.” Both Odile and Simon also point out how drawers – and other pull-out storage – can help to reduce food waste, as you can easily see what you have. “Drawers are fully telescopic – everything in the back of the cupboard comes right out to the front, so you can have a bird’s eye view of the contents,” Simon says. “This minimises duplication and food waste.”
For the ultimate in minimalism in the bedroom, keep all storage – not just clothes – behind closed doors. Here, Dual Designs has built in a roomy chest of drawers, a dressing table and a mirror fitted with LED lighting, all tucked out of sight when not in use. There’s also lots more packed in behind the other doors: all of the wardrobes contain drawers of various sizes, along with hanging rails, shelving and shoe racks.
