Pro Spotlight: Prepare Your Space to Age in Place
An Alpharetta architect shares how to outfit your bathroom safely and stylishly for limited mobility

Who: Robert Hames of Direct Build
Where: Alpharetta, Georgia
In his own words: “Many homeowners today, particularly active older adults, are thinking ahead and creating bathroom spaces that allow them to age in place.”
As baby boomers grow older, many are choosing to remodel their homes so they can get around easily and safely. Many falls by seniors occur at home — especially in the bathroom — so it’s important to take precautions.
“There are a number of features that we can add to bathrooms to make them more user-friendly, such as barrier-free entries and slip-resistant flooring,” architect Robert Hames says. Hames owns Direct Build, a design-build firm in Alpharetta.

A family affair. Hames founded the company in 2008 with his son, Andre. “It was a natural progression for me, from architectural school to designing and building residential homes; then Andre joined me,” he says. “We strive to improve the lives of our clients with each and every project.”
Driven by improvement. “Entire families’ lives can be transformed for years to come when we improve their living environment,” Hames says. “We’re providing a service for people that affects their lives for the better. It helps them enjoy their home.”
Read on for Hames’ tips for upgrading your bathroom to age in place.

1. Remove Barriers
A barrier-free shower entry removes the trip hazard of the typical shower curb. You can also remove shower doors for easy entry. “Clients like the idea of stepping into the shower without a shower door to open and close,” Hames says. “You also get increased air circulation, which reduces the risk of mold and mildew.”
The Alpharetta master bath seen here, in a Craftsman-style home, includes a large, barrier-free shower with a linear drain and a free-standing pedestal tub, for a wet-room concept. “Pebble mosaic tile flooring accents provide warmth against the white shiplap and subway tile walls, and act as a safe, nonslip surface,” Hames says.

2. Add Safety Accessories
Grab bars on bathroom walls help to mitigate safety risks. “They’re easy additions to bathrooms that make a big difference,” Hames says. “You can go the extra mile with slip-resistant flooring or a shower seat and similar accessories.”
To update the master bathroom in a 1987 Roswell home, seen here, Hames’ team installed a large, open shower with a barrier-free entry and slip-resistant natural stone flooring. They also installed a block in the shower so grab bars can be added in the future.

3. Install Drawers
Using drawers instead of doors in vanities allows you to access items without reaching or bending. “The general height for a vanity is 34 inches. Adding at least another 2 inches in height allows you more storage space and less need to bend,” Hames says.
In the same Roswell home, vanities were installed under large windows so the homeowners could take full advantage of their views of the Chattahoochee River. “The two vanities are stacked with pull drawers for easy access,” Hames says. “Floating mirrors on the windows allow the homeowners to look outside while getting ready for the day.”
