Pro Spotlight: Update Your Home From the Outside In
A Westlake Village window and door expert sheds some light on ways to brighten your space

Who: Kerry Smith of Agoura Sash & Door
Where: Westlake Village, California
In her own words: “Homeowners want to update spaces in their house to create a new look, but it can be difficult since there are a lot of offerings on the market.”
While layouts for new homes are trending toward open spaces inside and out, many older homes remain divided. If you’re looking to update your home, installing bigger windows and doors can create more functional space, Kerry Smith says.
“Especially in Southern California, many homeowners live outdoors more than indoors, and enhanced indoor-outdoor spaces allow greater functionality,” says Smith, the head of business development and the showroom manager at Agoura Sash & Door in Westlake Village.

Inspiration to improve. “We’re inspired regularly by helping our customers improve their spaces,” Smith says. “We offer advice to those who need help with home improvements or new construction. Whether a project is an entire house or some updates, we work with homeowners to achieve the aesthetic they’re looking for.”
Giving back. Agoura Sash & Door has been active in the community since it was founded in 1984. “We think it’s really important to be involved in the community and give back,” Smith says. “We support a number of foundations and societies in the area. Lifting up the community we’re in is a huge priority.”

1. Consider a Different Style
Homeowners often think their new windows should match the style of their existing exterior, but that’s not necessarily the case. “Your new space doesn’t need to match,” Smith says. “A new style of windows or doors could really update and brighten your home.”
A homeowner in Westlake Village replaced an entire wall with a large bifold door, seen here. “The door is stained wood on the inside, and they painted the color of the trim on the outside,” Smith says. “It’s a more contemporary look for the home, and it really opens things up.”

2. Prioritize Your Budget
You’re going to want to put your money in the spaces you use the most, so if you have a limited budget, spend money where you’ll get the most out of it, Smith advises. “Think about how the space will be improved by having enhanced flow or views.”
The owners of the Thousand Oaks home seen here had two priorities: maximizing their views and creating an indoor-outdoor living space. “Two bifold doors can be completely open or act as an individual French door, so it’s not difficult to go in and out,” Smith says. “The exterior space acts as a secondary living room, complete with a fireplace. All of the spaces showcase the incredible backyard and pool.”

3. Unite Your Indoor-Outdoor Spaces
New windows and doors let you upgrade your home while also creating space. “Opening up a wall or adding a patio can really improve how you live,“ Smith says. “People who have older houses are removing exterior walls and creating a large door to get more indoor-outdoor space.”
The living area seen here, in a Westlake Village home, extends outdoors to a patio thanks to the addition of wood bifold doors. “Ceiling beams integrate both spaces and make the room difference almost transparent, while furnishings make the patio inviting,” Smith says.
